AC Milan appoints Rúben Amorim as Head Coach
AC Milan officially named Rúben Amorim as their new head coach on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. The contract is set to last until 2028, with an option for an extra year. He takes over from Massimiliano Allegri, who was let go after the team finished fifth in Serie A with 70 points, missing out on Champions League qualification. Milan ended just 1 point behind Como, finishing in 4th place with 71 points. Thus, the challenge for the 2026-27 Season is significant.
The Mission
Milan’s management has tasked Amorim with undertaking a comprehensive rebuild to bring the club back to its former prominence in the Serie A standings.
Background
Amorim, a 41-year-old Portuguese manager, recently faced a tough 14-month period at Manchester United, where he was released in January. Before that, he earned high praise for his successful tenure at Sporting CP, where he secured two Primeira Liga titles.
What is Amorin’s Tactical Approach?
Amorim is recognized for his tactical rigidity and his preference for a structured 3-4-3 (or 3-4-2-1) formation.
According to Gerry Cardinale, Managing Partner of RedBird Capital Partners. “Rúben believes in high press attacking football with quick transitions that enable greater goal scoring. His philosophy aligns perfectly with our vision, while his leadership qualities and track record in developing players stood out to us. We believe in Rúben and are excited to welcome him to the Club.”
Rúben Amorim expressed: “There are ambitions that stay with you throughout your career, and coaching AC Milan has always been one of mine. I know exactly what this Club means: history, prestige and an extraordinary fanbase around the world. It is a challenge I embrace with pride and enthusiasm, fully aware of what these colors represent. I can’t wait to get started and to experience every day the passion that drives AC Milan.”
