A fantastic beginning for Colombia! On Wednesday, June 17, 2026, Colombia defeated Uzbekistan in a Group K match for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Matchday 1. The event was held at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Mexico. Group K also features Portugal and DR Congo.

In the second half, goals from Luis Díaz and Jáminton Campaz secured a 3-1 win for Colombia against the debuting Uzbekistan, marking the clash of the last two teams to kick off their World Cup journey at the Azteca stadium. Uzbekistan's Abbosbek Fayzullaev made history by scoring the first-ever World Cup goal for his country in the 60th minute. Colombia's goals came from Daniel Muñoz (40), Luis Diaz (65), and Jáminton Campaz (90+9).

Colombia controlled the game with nearly 70% possession for most of the match but found it challenging to penetrate Uzbekistan's solid 5-4-1 defensive setup in the initial hour. However, once they took the lead, Colombia's coach decided to play more defensively, allowing some late pressure from Uzbekistan before sealing the victory.

On an individual note, Luis Díaz shone as the star of the match, orchestrating play from the wing. His inventive play was crucial in breaking through the resilient Uzbek defense.

Looking ahead to Matchday 2, Uzbekistan will take on Portugal on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at Houston Stadium, Texas. Meanwhile, Colombia will go up against DR Congo on the same day at Guadalajara Stadium, Mexico.
