France triumphed over Senegal with a score of 3-1 in their first Group I match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The match took place on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.   Group I also features Norway and Iraq.  Kylian Mbappé was the star of the show, scoring two goals, while substitute Bradley Barcola added another to the tally. With this performance, Mbappé has now become France's all-time leading goalscorer, boasting 58 goals and surpassing Olivier Giroud!

Fans were certainly not let down, as France is considered one of the top contenders for the World Cup title. The goals came as follows: 66' - Kylian Mbappé netted the first goal, thanks to an assist from Michael Olise. 81' - Bradley Barcola increased the lead for France with a clever chip over the goalkeeper.

Senegal's Ibrahim Mbaye, a teenager from Paris Saint-Germain, managed to score a consolation goal in the 95th minute. However, Kylian Mbappé capped off the match with a stunning strike from outside the box in the 96th minute. It's all about "Allez les Bleus."



 

Historical Context:  This matchup carries a rich history, reminiscent of the 2002 World Cup when Senegal stunned the world with a 1-0 victory over France. Will the outcome be different this time around?

Olise delivered a stunning pass into the right side of the area, and Mbappé made a fantastic run, sliding it past Mendy on his first touch into the bottom-left corner. Allez Les Bleus! In the 82nd minute, Bradley Barcola, who came off the bench, scored to extend France's advantage. The AC Milan midfielder, Adrien Rabiot, patiently waited before delivering a delightful pass to Barcola, who elegantly moved from the left to the right side of the area. He then skillfully lifted his shot over goalkeeper Édouard Mendy, doubling France's lead.

In the 95th minute, Ibrahim Mbaye found the net for Senegal. He skillfully evaded his defender, surged into the box, and struck the ball powerfully into the goal. Ibrahim Mbaye's goal left Theo Hernandez behind as he fired a strong shot into the near post, beating a less-than-perfect Maignan.
