On this day in 1944,  Day of Remembrance.

Carlo Castellani died in a Nazi concentration camp on 11 August 1944.  The football stadium in Empoli bears the name Carlo Castellani. Castellani was their record goalscorer until a few years ago, and the first of many players who started at Empoli and made their way to Italy’s top division. Castellani played his first game for the club in 1926, as a 16-year-old.  Castellani spent a few seasons with other Tuscan clubs, Livorno and Viareggio.

In March 1944, reportedly, the fascist authorities crack down in the wake of a general strike having a list of people suspected of involvement.  In this list, there was the father of Carlo Castellani.    When the fascist police arrived at Castellani’s house, he offered to take his father’s place because his father was in poor health.   Sadly, Castellani was deported to KZ Mauthausen, in Gusen, Upper Austria. Castellani fell ill with typhoid soon after he arrived. He died on 11 August 1944. Over 44,000 people died at Gusen, the majority in the incinerator.
