The competition for the Scudetto is heating up!   Napoli triumphed over Hellas Verona at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. This win propels Napoli to the top of the standings with 47 points from 20 matches. They are currently four points ahead of Inter, who have two games in hand, and five points clear of Atalanta, who have one game less than Napoli. Meanwhile, Verona sits at 19 points, just a point above third-from-bottom Cagliari. This was a solid performance from Conte’s squad, who dealt with Hellas Verona effectively, scoring once in each half and missing several chances to increase their lead.

The highly anticipated Derby between Torino and Juventus concluded in a draw. It was a fiercely contested match, with all the action taking place in the first half. The Bianconeri took the lead with a stunning left-footed shot from Yildiz, but the Granata equalized late in the half thanks to a fantastic goal from Vlasic. The second half was filled with determination and shifts in momentum, with the best opportunities falling to Thiago Motta’s side (who saw both him and Vanoli sent off). Genoa secured a narrow victory over Parma at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium. The Grifone triumphed 1-0, with Morten Frendrup scoring the decisive goal, aided by a deflection from Del Prato. This single goal was enough for the home side to claim a crucial win in their battle for survival, pushing them further away from the relegation zone. Meanwhile, Parma’s struggles continued as they dropped more points, having previously drawn 0-0 with Torino, which mirrored Genoa’s scoreless match against Lecce.

AC Milan and Cagliari played to a draw at the famous San Siro Stadium.  Fresh off their triumph in the Italian Super Cup, Milan was keen to build on that success and move closer to the Champions League positions. However, they were held to a draw at home by a resilient Cagliari side. The Rossoneri controlled the first half but only managed to break the deadlock early in the second half with a goal from Morata. Inter managed to secure a narrow victory against Venezia in Serie A Week 20 on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at the Pier Luigi Penzo Stadium in Venice, Italy. This marks the sixth straight away win for the Nerazzurri without allowing a single goal, but it was a tough match for Inzaghi’s squad against a resilient Venezia. Darmian put Inter ahead in the first half, and although the home team fought back in the second half, they could only hit the post through Busio. Venezia remains in the relegation zone, sitting in 19th place.

Inter gained the upper hand in the 16th minute when Matteo Darmian found the back of the net with a right-footed shot that slipped past Venezia’s goalkeeper, Filip Stankovic. Although Lautaro’s attempt was saved by Stankovic, Darmian was quick to pounce on the rebound and scored the crucial tap-in!

Venezia has gone unbeaten in their last three league matches at the Penzo, with one win and two draws. This marks the first time since October to December 2001 that the Venetians have managed to avoid consecutive home defeats in Serie A, a streak that occurred under coach Giuseppe Iachini. Meanwhile, Inter has been on a roll, winning their last five league games and allowing only one goal during that stretch (19-1 overall). They haven’t achieved more consecutive wins in Serie A since a ten-match streak from January to March 2024. However, the Nerazzurri have not kept four consecutive clean sheets in the league since December 2023. Inter, along with Juventus, is one of the only two teams yet to lose an away match this season. Fresh off their triumph in the Italian Super Cup, Milan was keen to build on that success and move closer to the Champions League positions. However, they were held to a draw at home by a resilient Cagliari side. The Rossoneri controlled the first half but only managed to break the deadlock early in the second half with a goal from Morata. Cagliari quickly responded with an equalizer from Zortea. Milan pushed hard for a winner, coming close twice with Abraham, but ultimately couldn’t secure the victory.

In the end, both teams settled for a point, which was a more satisfying outcome for Cagliari. They now sit on 18 points, while Milan matches Bologna with 28 points.

The action starts…

AC Milan opened the scoring in the 51st minute when Alvaro Morata found the back of the net against Cagliari’s goalkeeper, Elia Caprile. Theo Hernandez sprinted down the left flank and sent a cross into the penalty area. Christian Pulisic took a quick shot that hit the post, but Morata was quick to react and capitalized on the rebound to score!

Cagliari brought the score to 1-1 in the 55th minute. Nadir Zortea found the back of the net with a right-footed strike from outside the box, sending the ball into the bottom left corner past Milan’s goalkeeper Mike Maignan, thanks to an assist from Mattia Felici.

✅    Stats before the game:

Milan has gone 13 games without a loss against Cagliari in Serie A, with 10 wins and 3 draws. However, after their first leg ended in a 3-3 draw, the Rossoneri risk not winning either match against the Sardinians this season, which would be a first since the 1999/2000 season when they also had two draws.

In the 2000s, Milan played Cagliari at home 18 times in Serie A, scoring 46 goals and conceding 11, winning 17 of those matches. No other team has been defeated more often at San Siro during this period, with Lazio being the only other team to match that record.

Cagliari, fresh off a victory against Monza, hasn’t won back-to-back Serie A games since March 2024, and in their last two successful outings, they lost the following match. Milan has drawn three of their last four home league games, including the last two, and they haven’t had three consecutive home draws in Serie A since January 2020.

Sergio Conceição started his tenure as Milan manager with two wins in the Super Cup; the last Milan coach to win their first three games across all competitions was Arrigo Sacchi in August 1987. Conceição will be the second Portuguese coach to manage Milan in Serie A, following Paulo Fonseca. The last two coaches before him did not win their league debuts, with Cristian Brocchi being the last to do so in April 2016 against Sampdoria. In the last two Super Cup matches, Milan came from behind to win, but throughout the first half of the season, they only managed to come back from a deficit three times, resulting in three draws and no victories.

Lazio marked their 125th anniversary with a draw. On Friday, January 10, 2025, they concluded Serie A Week 20 with a tie at the Olimpico di Roma Stadium in Rome, Italy. This result means Lazio has now gone three matches without a win. The Biancocelesti secured their second draw in the last three games, bringing their total to 36 points, which is four points ahead of Juventus and Fiorentina, who have played two fewer matches.
