Napoli triumphed over Atalanta with a score of 3-2 in the Serie A Week 21 match held on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo, Italy. This victory marks Napoli’s sixth straight win in the league, solidifying their top position with 50 points, while Atalanta remains in third place with 43 points. Napoli is clearly leading the charge for the Scudetto, leaving the other teams trailing behind.
Retegui opened the scoring in the 16th minute, followed by Politano’s goal in the 27th minute, and McTominay extended the lead in the 40th minute. In the second half, Lookman leveled the score with a brilliant individual effort in the 55th minute, but Lukaku netted the winning goal with a header in the 78th minute, assisted twice by Anguissa.
Looking ahead, Atalanta will travel to Como for their next match, while Napoli will host Juventus.
The action starts…
Atalanta opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Mateo Retegui found the back of the net with a powerful left-footed shot into the top left corner. Napoli’s goalkeeper, Alex Meret, had no chance to stop it. The ball came to Retegui after a rebound, and he skillfully placed it under the crossbar from inside the area.

Stats before the game
Atalanta has secured victories in their last two Serie A encounters with Napoli, both ending in a 3–0 scoreline. The last time the Bergamo side managed to win three consecutive matches against the Partenopei was from April 1997 to February 1998, when they achieved three straight 1–0 victories under coach Emiliano Mondonico. However, Atalanta has faced challenges at home, losing their last three Serie A matches against Napoli, marking the longest losing streak at home against a single opponent in this competition.
The last time they experienced four or more consecutive home losses was against Juventus, spanning from January 2005 to March 2016, totaling nine defeats before Gian Piero Gasperini took charge.

Atalanta are unbeaten in their last 15 league matches (11W, 4D), but have drawn all of their last three; only between January and July 2020 have the Bergamo team collected more consecutive games without defeat (17 in that case – 13W, 4D) and they have not drawn four consecutive games since the period between April and May 2015.
Atalanta have scored in all of their last 25 home games in Serie A (63 goals, 2.5 on average per game), already a record streak for the Bergamo team in the competition; only Inter (32) have a longer open streak of home games with goals.
Napoli have won their last five Serie A games, the three most recent without conceding a goal; under Antonio Conte, the Neapolitans have never gone beyond three clean sheets in a row, nor beyond five consecutive wins.
Napoli have won seven of their first 10 away games this season (D2 L1) and have only twice won more than seven of their first 11 away games of the season: 10 in 2017/18, when they finished in second place, and nine in 2022/23, the season they won their last Scudetto.
Player Stats
Mateo Retegui has made quite an impact in Serie A, netting 20 goals since he started competing last season, which is the highest tally for any Italian player during that time. Specifically, he has scored 13 goals in just 18 matches this season. The last Atalanta player to achieve a better single-season record was Cristiano Doni back in 2001/02, who scored 16 goals.
Meanwhile, in his last two league matches, Romelu Lukaku has contributed one goal against Fiorentina and assisted two others—one against Fiorentina and another against Hellas Verona. Notably, the Napoli striker has only managed to score in three consecutive Serie A games once before, during February and March 2021 with Inter, where he set a personal best of four.
