Serie A Standing BEFORE the game:
Genoa, 11th position with 23 points and a negative goal difference of -10
AS Roma, 10th position with 24 points and a positive goal difference of +2

Roma won the Serie A Week 21 on Friday, January 17, 2025, at the Olimpico di Roma Stadium in Rome, Italy. The Giallorossi triumphed thanks to goals from Dovbyk, El Shaarawy, and Leali, while Masini managed to equalize temporarily for the visitors. Dybala’s outstanding performance added flair to a convincing display by Ranieri’s Roma, who are inching closer to the European spots.

In their next match, Roma will take on Udinese, while Genoa will face Monza.

Roma gained the upper hand in the 25th minute when Artem Dovbyk found the net with a left-footed shot from close range, sending the ball into the bottom left corner. A fantastic pass from Saelemakers set up Pellegrini, whose shot was initially saved by Leali. However, Dovbyk reacted swiftly, outpacing Bani to tap the ball back into the net, giving the Giallorossi the lead.

Genoa brought the score to 1-1 in the 35th minute. Patrizio Masini found the back of the net with a right-footed shot from the center of the box after a corner kick given away by Angeliño. A fantastic cross from Miretti set up Masini, who executed a brilliant strike on the fly, leaving Svilar with no chance.

Roma regained the lead in the 60th minute when forward Stephan El Shaarawy found the back of the net with a right-footed shot aimed at the bottom right corner. Paulo Dybala set him up perfectly, delivering a fantastic pass that allowed El Shaarawy to strike a precise, low curling shot from the edge of the box, leaving Leali with no chance.

Genoa is in turmoil! In the 73rd minute, Nicola Leali accidentally scores an own goal. Roma makes a bold move, with Dybala sprinting to the post and taking a shot at the net. Leali, in a bid to block the goal, ends up putting the ball into his own net.

Stats before the game:

Genoa have won 33 Serie A matches against Roma (D26 L54), only against Lazio (W38) have they done better in the competition; however, the Rossoblu have collected just one win in their last 19 matches against the Giallorossi in the competition (D5 L13).
Roma have collected four clean sheets in their last six Serie A matches against Genoa, as many as in their previous 14; furthermore, the Giallorossi have failed to score only once in their last 19 encounters with the Rossoblu in the competition.
Roma have not lost at home against Genoa in exactly 35 years, since 17 January 1990; their unbeaten streak of 21 home matches (W17 L4) is the third longest among those opened by the Giallorossi in the competition (21 also against Parma, 27 against Hellas Verona and 30 against Bari).

Roma are unbeaten in their last four Serie A games (W2 D2), having lost seven of their previous nine (W2); they have also won three of their last six games (D2 L1), as many as in their previous 15 (D4 L8).

Having lost two home games in a row, Roma have won each of their last three Serie A games at the Stadio Olimpico; they have not done better since a run of five consecutive home wins under José Mourinho between September and November 2023.
Roma have won six of their 20 Serie A games this season (D6 L8), their worst result in the three points for a win era at this point in the season; they have not won six or fewer of their first 21 games of a season since 1993/94 (five in that case).

Patrick Vieira has kept five clean sheets in his first eight Serie A games; There are only 12 coaches in the history of the championship to have kept six clean sheets in the first nine games, the last of which was Alexander Blessin with Genoa.

✅   What’s happening in Round 20?

The competition for the Scudetto is heating up!   Napoli triumphed over Hellas Verona at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. This win propels Napoli to the top of the standings with 47 points from 20 matches. They are currently four points ahead of Inter, who have two games in hand, and five points clear of Atalanta, who have one game less than Napoli. Meanwhile, Verona sits at 19 points, just a point above third-from-bottom Cagliari. This was a solid performance from Conte’s squad, who dealt with Hellas Verona effectively, scoring once in each half and missing several chances to increase their lead.

The highly anticipated Derby between Torino and Juventus concluded in a draw. It was a fiercely contested match, with all the action taking place in the first half. The Bianconeri took the lead with a stunning left-footed shot from Yildiz, but the Granata equalized late in the half thanks to a fantastic goal from Vlasic. The second half was filled with determination and shifts in momentum, with the best opportunities falling to Thiago Motta’s side (who saw both him and Vanoli sent off). Yildiz, Nico Gonzalez, and Koopmeiners all came close to scoring. Juventus remains stuck in a rut, unable to shake off their negative streak and trailing Lazio by 3 points. Meanwhile, Torino also struggles to find a win, managing to secure a point above the relegation zone.

Genoa secured a narrow victory over Parma at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium. The Grifone triumphed 1-0, with Morten Frendrup scoring the decisive goal, aided by a deflection from Del Prato. This single goal was enough for the home side to claim a crucial win in their battle for survival, pushing them further away from the relegation zone. Meanwhile, Parma’s struggles continued as they dropped more points, having previously drawn 0-0 with Torino, which mirrored Genoa’s scoreless match against Lecce.

AC Milan and Cagliari played to a draw at the famous San Siro Stadium.  Fresh off their triumph in the Italian Super Cup, Milan was keen to build on that success and move closer to the Champions League positions. However, they were held to a draw at home by a resilient Cagliari side. The Rossoneri controlled the first half but only managed to break the deadlock early in the second half with a goal from Morata. Cagliari quickly responded with an equalizer from Zortea.  Cagliari now sit on 18 points, while Milan matches Bologna with 28 points.

Genoa secured a narrow victory over Parma in Serie A Week 20 on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium. The Grifone triumphed 1-0, with Morten Frendrup scoring the decisive goal, aided by a deflection from DelPrato. Genoa has now won their last two Serie A matches against Parma, with previous victories of 2-1 in March 2021 and 1-0 last November. Notably, they have yet to achieve three consecutive league wins against the Gialloblù.

In the upcoming round, Genoa will take on Roma, while Parma will go up against Venezia.

Genoa took the lead in the 65th minute when Morten Frendrup scored with a right-footed shot from the left side of the box, sending the ball into the bottom right corner! The Grifone benefited from the impressive teamwork between Miretti and Frendrup. The former Juventus player provided a brilliant assist, allowing the Danish midfielder to trick goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, aided by a deflection from DelPrato.

 Stats before the game

Genoa has triumphed in their last two Serie A encounters with Parma, winning 2-1 in March 2021 and 1-0 last November. Interestingly, they have never managed to secure three consecutive victories against the Gialloblù in the top division. Additionally, the last instance of the Grifone achieving two clean sheets in a row against the Ducali in this league was between February and October 2013, with results of 0-0 and 1-0. Among teams they have faced at least 30 times in Serie A, Parma has only suffered fewer defeats against Torino (seven) than they have against Genoa (ten).
