He was born in Pisa on 14th August 1984, and spent his youth with Livorno. After four seasons with them, Juventus bought him and loaned him to Fiorentina for one year. He moved back to the Old Lady in 2005 and he won three consecutive Italian top flight titles (2011/2012, 2012/2013, 2013/2014), playing as a full back as well as a left back.On the international stage, he won the Under 19 European Championship in Lichtenstein at a very young age, and made his debut for the first team in 2004. He played at UEFA Euro 2008 and 2012, at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and at the Confederation Cup 2009 and 2013.
