Switzerland defeated Colombia in the Round of 16 match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday, July 7, 2026. The game was at BC Place in Vancouver, Canada.  Congrats to Switzerland, for the first time in 72 years, are in the World Cup quarter-finals!!!   Wishing all the best to the Serie A players on the Switzerland team.  Switzerland will face  Argentina in the quarterfinals in Kansas City. This marks only the second time these two countries have met in a World Cup, with Colombia having won their last encounter.

The game includes players from both Serie A and Serie B. For Switzerland: Inter's Manuel Akanji was on the field for the whole match. Pisa's Michel Aebischer (Serie B) couldn't play because of a muscle problem. Bologna's Remo Freuler also played the full game. AC Milan's Ardon Jashari was subbed off at halftime for Djibril Sow.

For Colombia: Bologna's Jhon Lucumi played until the 119th minute before being replaced by Yerry Mina from Cagliari.

Colombia holds the 11th spot in the world rankings, while Switzerland is in 15th place.

 

How they made it to the Round of 16

Switzerland topped Group B with 7 points, winning against Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and drawing with Qatar. In the Round of 32, they defeated Algeria 2-0, marking their first World Cup knockout stage victory since 1938.

Colombia finished first in Group K with 7 points, securing wins over Uzbekistan and DR Congo, along with a draw against Portugal. In the Round of 32, they advanced by narrowly beating Ghana 1-0.
