Argentina defeated Egypt 3-2 in the World Cup Round of 16 on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. Egypt started strong, taking a 2-0 lead with goals from Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico. But with just 11 minutes left on the clock, Argentina turned things around with a burst of late goals. Cristian Romero, Lionel Messi, and a last-minute winner from Enzo Fernández secured the win for Argentina. This victory sends Argentina to the quarter-finals, where they'll take on the winner of the Switzerland vs. Colombia match.

Surely, this match will definitely go down in World Cup history, especially since it marks the first time a team has come back to win in regulation after being down by two goals at the 78th minute. Amazingly, Argentina pulled off a comeback that seemed unlikely as the game neared its end, overturning the two-goal lead established by Egypt through Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico.

The spark for the Albiceleste came from Romero, who scored with an assist from Lionel Messi. Messi then took matters into his own hands to net the equalizer, followed by Enzo Fernández's decisive goal, a powerful header that beat Egyptian goalkeeper Oufa Shobeir for a final score of 3-2.  The assist was provided by Inter forward Lautaro Martinez.   Of course, Egypt deserves a lot of credit for keeping the defending champions on the ropes until the 78th minute, but Argentina's pride and skill, led by their captain, were crucial for this incredible comeback. Although Egypt wasn't too happy in the end.

The match featured two Serie A players. Inter's Lautaro Martinez came on for Rodrigo de Paul in the 66th minute and assisted Enzo Fernandez's winning goal. Como's Nico Paz was on the bench as a substitute.

⚽️ In the 84th minute, Lionel Messi turns a loose ball in the penalty area into gold after a deflection involving Lautaro Martinez and Gonzalo Montiel. He strikes it hard and straight from inside the box, with the goalkeeper deflecting it onto the underside of the crossbar, and the ball ends up in the net.
