Result Uruguay - Spain, Friday, 26 June 2026, World Cup Group Spain knocked Uruguay out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a narrow 1-0 win in their final Group H match held in Guadalajara, Mexico. The only goal of the match came from Álex Baena in the 42nd minute, capitalizing on a mistake by the goalkeeper. This victory secured Spain's top position in the group. Unfortunately, it marked an early exit for Uruguay, which is certainly a significant disappointment for the South American team. Spain topped Group H with 7 points, moving on to the Round of 32, while Uruguay ended up in third place with just 2 points, getting eliminated alongside Saudi Arabia. Interestingly, by winning the group, Spain managed to avoid a matchup with the defending champions, Argentina, which would have undoubtedly been an exciting game! Spain is set to play against the second-place team from Group J—either Austria or Algeria—in Inglewood, California, on Thursday. Uruguay had only one player from Serie A in their squad. Napoli defender Mathias Olivera played the full match. A significant mistake by 40-year-old Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, who mishandled Baena's shot, led to his substitution at halftime. The ball reached Baena, who controlled it in the box and shot with his right foot. The attempt was aimed at the center, but goalkeeper Fernando Muslera failed to handle it, allowing the ball to slip in.
