Iachini presentation

Fiorentina’s new coach Giuseppe Iachini was unveiled to the media at the Stadio Franchi on Saturday afternoon.

Joe Barone spoke briefly at the start of the media conference: “Fiorentina would like to thank [Vincenzo] Montella for his professionalism and commitment. We took a tough but necessary decision because we want to see the Fiorentina side we all admired at the start of the season.
“We needed to make a change and we chose Giuseppe Iachini because he’s the right person to connect with our fans. Giuseppe has strong ties with Florence, the fans and the stadium after some great seasons here and he puts great effort into his work.

“We know we need to improve the squad in the January transfer window and we have complete confidence in Daniele Prade. We have a very young squad and a plan in place to develop the team. We’re on the right track – we just need to be patient.”

Daniele Prade also said a few words: “I’m very happy to have the chance to work closely with Beppe. He’s a coach who believes in hard graft and strong values. Now I expect to see a big reaction from the players.”

Iachini himself then spoke of his delight at returning to his ‘second home’.

“I’d like to thank Rocco Commisso, a passionate man – a fan and a fighter. I think we’re similar in that respect. I hope to be able to repay the faith he’s shown in me.

“I’m delighted to be back at what I consider to be my second home. I have lots of great memories here, I know lots of people and I’m very fond of the city and the fans – they’ve always shown their appreciation for me, even when I came back as an opponent.

“I’m very enthusiastic and can’t wait to get stuck into the job. I believe in hard work and I’ll try to show the players my passion. I want an organised team who know what they should be doing on the pitch, who display a mentality and spirit we can be proud of, and who always set out to win regardless of the opposition and whether we’re home or away. I want professional footballers who play their heart out for the club.

“The team’s going through a sticky patch but we’re ready to roll up our sleeves and work on the fine details to turn things around. I’m sure the fans will get behind us as they always have done because they love this club.”

How do you think you can improve this team?

“I don’t have a magic wand but I do believe in hard work. I have some idea of what the team perhaps needs already but I’ll understand better after I’ve had some time with them on the pitch. I want an organised, determined side and I think we’ll see the fruit of my work in the space of a few weeks.”

What formation will you use?

“I’ve used different formations in my career depending on the attributes of the players at my disposal. We have a quality squad here with a mix of youth and experience but more than the formation it’s about how you play with and without the ball. I want us to be compact. I need to see the lads working on the training ground and get to know them better before I make any decisions regarding the formation.”

What’s Federico Chiesa’s best position?

“I spoke to Chiesa before Christmas and I’ve watched all of the games and in-game situations. Chiesa was here with me – he sacrificed his holidays for me. That just shows you what a great lad he is. He wants what’s best for Fiorentina. He can play in lots of positions because he has power and pace. I’ll see where he best fits into the tactical set-up we decide to use.”
