Canada’s Ismaël Koné suffered a broken leg during the World Cup match against Qatar.

Sad news for Sassuolo and Canada midfielder Ismaël Koné, who suffered a serious tibia and fibula fracture in his left leg on June 18, 2026. The 24-year-old midfielder was injured during Canada’s remarkable 6-0 group stage win over Qatar in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Koné endured a horrific leg injury (broken tibia and fibula) due to a harsh tackle by Assim Madibo, which resulted in a red card for Madibo. He was later given a five-match suspension by FIFA.

To manage his severe acute pain, Koné was given a “green whistle” (methoxyflurane), a quick-acting, self-administered inhaler, before being carried off the field to a resounding ovation. In a touching moment, Koné’s teammate Nathan Saliba scored Canada’s fourth goal shortly after, emotionally lifting Koné’s No. 8 jersey to the home crowd in Vancouver.

Although the injury ruled Koné out for the rest of the tournament, he successfully underwent surgery and later made a heartfelt appearance in Vancouver to cheer on his team.

Reports indicate that Koné will be sidelined for approximately 4 to 5 months, missing the remainder of the 2026 World Cup and the start of the 2026–27 Serie A season. We wish him a speedy recovery. Another Serie A player on the Canada team is Juventus forward Jonathan David.
