Benfica delivered a stunning 6-0 defeat to Auckland City during the Group Stage of the FIFA Club World Cup on Friday, June 20, 2025, at the Inter & Co Stadium in Florida.

In the first half of the Group C match, Auckland City attempted to counterattack against the Portuguese giants, but they were significantly outshot 18-1.

A thunderstorm caused a delay of over two hours before the second half could begin. Once play resumed, Benfica quickly started scoring goals.

Both Ángel Di María and Leandro Barreiro netted two goals each.

Di María’s first goal came from the penalty spot deep into stoppage time at the end of the first half. His second, which was also the team’s sixth, was another penalty scored deep in added time at the end of the match.

The second half was dominated by Benfica. Vangelis Pavlidis opened the scoring in the 53rd minute, Renato Sanches quickly followed with a third goal, and Barreiro added two more …. the rest is history…. total blow for Auckland and party for Benfica.

Stats before the game …

After a recent defeat to Sporting on May 25, Benfica is looking to regroup and turn their fortunes around in this upcoming match, as they seek their first victory in four games.

Auckland City has also struggled, mirroring their opponents’ form, as they come into this match following a humiliating loss. Bayern Munich set a record for the largest victory in FIFA Club World Cup history by defeating Auckland City FC 10-0 in their Group C match at the TQL Stadium in Cincinnati on Sunday.

Result Saudi Arabia 0 – 1 USA, Thursday 19 June 2025, CONCACAF Gold Cup
Group Stage – Group D

The United States triumphed 1-0 against Saudi Arabia on Thursday, June 19, 2025, during the CONCACAF Gold Cup Group Stage at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas. This win secures a place for the U.S. men’s national team in the quarterfinals of the Concacaf Gold Cup.  The U.S. will finish group play on Sunday, June 22, facing Haiti at AT&T Stadium.

Chris Richards netted the goal with a left-footed shot from the center of the box into the top left corner, with an assist from Sebastian Berhalter. Saudi Arabia’s goalkeeper, Nawaf Al-Aqidi, was unable to prevent the goal.

In the context of the match, the victory, along with the 1-1 draw between Trinidad and Tobago and Haiti in Group D’s other game on Thursday in Houston, secured a knockout stage spot for the Americans.

Regarding tactics, U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino maintained the same lineup that achieved a 5-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday. This marks the first instance of him not making changes in consecutive matches since he took charge of the team last October. However, against No. 58 Saudi Arabia, the 16th-ranked Americans displayed less attacking prowess than they did against the No. 100 Soca Warriors.

The Gold Cup serves as the final competitive challenge for the USA team before the 2026 World Cup. As co-hosts with Mexico and Canada, the U.S. automatically qualifies for the World Cup.
