Result Napoli - Arsenal, Wednesday, 9 September 2026, UEFA Champions League, Matchday 1, League Phase

Napoli faced a defeat against Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League, Matchday 1, League Phase on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in Naples, Italy. This loss is quite disappointing for the fans. Truly, it’s a Champions League debut to forget for Massimiliano Allegri. The Gunners only needed a goal from Martin Odegaard to overcome the Partenopei in their first match of the League Phase. Napoli is left with zero points in the standings.

Allegri's team fought hard but ultimately lost to Arsenal in their opening match of the League Phase of the prestigious European competition. It was a challenging debut against fierce opponents who, unlike Napoli, started their season with three consecutive wins in the Premier League (including a derby against Chelsea, following victories over Aston Villa and Coventry City) and clinched the Community Shield. With this defeat (the decisive goal by Odegaard came in the 75th minute of the second half), Napoli unfortunately records their third consecutive loss after falling to Como and losing 3-2 to Inter at San Siro in the last Serie A match.

Despite a solid defensive performance and the season debut of Kevin De Bruyne in Napoli's starting lineup, the team struggled.

Allegri's squad is expected to improve from last year's disappointing 30th place out of 36. So far, Napoli has not won any of their last four UEFA Champions League matches, marking their longest winless streak in the competition (at least since the 2005 season).

Napoli's Matchday 2 game is set against Villarreal on October 13, 2026, at the Estadio de la Cerámica in Vila-real, Spain.

Martin Odegaard was named Player of the Match.

🔵Napoli 0 - 1 Arsenal

In the 75th minute, Martin Ødegaard scores with an assist from Tzolis, who strikes with his left foot, hitting the inside of the post and sending the ball into the net. Tzolis delivers the ball to Odegaard near the edge of the Napoli box, and the captain allows it to roll across his body before unleashing a powerful left-footed shot that hits the left post and finds the back of the net!

Stats BEFORE the game Napoli vs Arsenal

This will be the fifth overall meeting between Napoli and Arsenal, the first since the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals in the 2018/19 season. The Gunners have triumphed in three of the four previous encounters (1 loss), keeping a clean sheet in all three victories.

Napoli has only lost two of their last 21 home matches in the Champions League (12 wins, 7 draws), but they were defeated 3-2 by Chelsea in their last home game in January of this year. Despite having played a total of 37 home matches in the UEFA Champions League and the European Cup, Napoli has never suffered two consecutive home defeats.

Napoli has lost just three of their 13 home games against English teams in major European competitions (8 wins, 2 draws), but they did fall to Chelsea in their most recent Champions League match in January (2-3).

Arsenal has managed to win only one of their last six away games against Italian teams in the Champions League (1 draw, 4 losses), failing to score in five of those matches. Their sole victory came earlier this year, with a 3-1 win against Inter last January.
