Result South Africa - Canada, Sunday, 28 June 2026, Round of 32

In a thrilling Round of 32 match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Canada triumphed over South Africa with a score of 1-0, achieving their first knockout round win. Stephen Eustáquio netted the decisive goal with a spectacular volley in the 92nd minute. The game was held on Sunday, 28 June 2026, at the Los Angeles Stadium. Canada's victory marks a significant milestone in their World Cup journey, showcasing their determination and skill on the international stage. Fans celebrated as Eustáquio's late goal secured their place in the tournament's next phase.

Canada will face the winner of the match between the Netherlands and Morocco in the Round of 16. The two teams will compete in Monterrey, Mexico, to determine who moves forward, with the Round of 16 match scheduled for Houston Stadium in Houston, TX, on Saturday, July 4.

Jonathan David, the forward for Juventus, played the full match. He holds the record as Canada's all-time leading goal scorer and is a key player for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Another standout moment is Canada goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau achieving yet another clean sheet!!! Previously, Crépeau made history by earning Canada's first-ever Men's World Cup clean sheet during a dominant 6-0 group stage win over Qatar. Well, he has done it again! Maintaining a clean sheet boosts the team's confidence. Great work!

Unfortunately, Canada will be missing their talented Sassuolo midfielder Ismaël Koné, who suffered a broken leg in the previous match. Leading the charge for Canada is Juventus forward Jonathan David. The South Africa squad does not include any Serie A players.

Note: Ismaël Koné sustained a left leg injury (fracturing his tibia and fibula) on June 18, 2026, during Canada's 6-0 victory over Qatar in the FIFA World Cup. He was injured early in the second half due to a tackle from Qatar's Assim Madibo.  However, the morale is soaring! Koné has been spotted on the sidelines using crutches to cheer on his team during their knockout stage games.

How did they reach the Round of 32?

South Africa: They advanced to the knockout round following a remarkable 1-0 upset against South Korea in their final group stage match. They are riding high on momentum after overcoming a challenging start to the tournament.

Canada: They secured second place in Group B, despite a final 2-1 defeat to Switzerland. Their chances have been greatly enhanced by the return of captain and star player Alphonso Davies, who is now match-fit after recovering from a hamstring injury.

Statistics: In their only prior international encounter, South Africa triumphed over Canada 2-0 in a friendly match in 2007.

In the 92nd minute, Stephen Eustaquio scores!!! The crowd erupts in celebration. The South African defense poorly clears a cross from the right, and the Canadian midfielder seizes the ball just outside the box, unleashing a powerful shot that Ronwen Williams could do nothing about! The cheers for Canada are deafening!
