Result Mexico - England, Sunday, 5 July 2026, World Cup Round of 16

England triumphed over Mexico with a score of 3-2 in a thrilling FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match at the Estadio Azteca on Sunday, July 5, 2026. The eagerly awaited game was postponed by an hour due to heavy thunderstorms. Even after being reduced to 10 players and facing significant late-game pressure, England managed to secure their place in the quarterfinals.

In a remarkable display, Jude Bellingham netted two goals in just over 90 seconds, giving England a swift 2-0 advantage. The atmosphere was electric as Bellingham quieted the Azteca Stadium.

Then, just before halftime, Julián Quiñones scored for Mexico in the 42nd minute, narrowing the gap and raising concerns for England as the fans erupted in support of their team.

Things took a turn for the worse for England when Jarell Quansah received a red card in the 54th minute, leaving them with only 10 players for more than 30 minutes.

Shortly after, Anthony Gordon was fouled, leading to Harry Kane converting a penalty to extend the lead to 3-1. However, Mexico gained hope when a VAR review determined that Kane had fouled Brian Gutiérrez, resulting in a penalty that Raúl Jiménez successfully converted, bringing Mexico within one goal. Mexico took advantage of their numerical superiority, firing off 20 shots and keeping England pinned in their own half, but England managed to hold on for the victory.

In this match, the Mexican national team features 2 players from Serie A: Genoa defender Johan Vásquez, who played the full match. AC Milan forward Santiago Giménez entered the game in the 62nd minute, taking the place of Gilberto Mora.
