The curse has been lifted; from 1994 to 2018, Mexico made it to the Round of 16 in seven straight tournaments but faced elimination at that same stage each time. Now, the phrase "Let's believe" resonates with the fans.

Mexico's winning streak continues as they topped Group A with an impressive record of 3-0 and no goals conceded, while Ecuador advanced from Group E. Unfortunately, Ecuador's journey has come to an end.

The match showcased three players from Serie A. Mexico's AC Milan forward Santiago Giménez came on in the 73rd minute, replacing Raúl Jiménez, while Genoa defender Johan Vásquez played the full match. Ecuador's squad included AC Milan defender Pervis Estupiñán, who was listed as a substitute.

 



 

How did they reach the Round of 32?

Co-hosts Mexico became the sixth nation in World Cup history to qualify for the knockout stage by winning all three of their group matches without conceding a goal. In Match 1, they defeated South Africa 2-0 at the iconic Estadio Azteca. In Match 2, they secured a narrow 1-0 victory over South Korea. In Match 3, they comfortably beat Czechia 3-0 to finish at the top of Group A.

Ecuador’s path to the knockout stage in Mexico was much tougher, marked by resilience and a significant upset on Matchday 3. In Match 1, they faced a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat against Ivory Coast after conceding a goal in the 90th minute. In Match 2, they were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Curacao. In Match 3, they found themselves down 1-0 to Germany just 2 minutes in but made an incredible comeback to win 2-1, clinching their spot in the tournament with a goal from Gonzalo Plata in the 77th minute.
