Italy set a 36 unbeaten consecutive games.

Stats before the game:  Switzerland and Italy playing 59 matches, Italy 29 wins, 22 draws and Switzerland 8 defeats.  Italy have not lost any of their last nine games against Switzerland (5 wins, 4draws); the last defeat was 28 years ago, 0-1 in Bern in a qualifying match for the World Cup (May 1993). Roberto Mancini was also included in the Italian national team.  Italy are unbeaten in 15 of the last 16 games played on Swiss territory (4W, 11N – including a challenge on neutral ground), nevertheless drawing the three most recent matches, including one in Basel (0-0, August 2009).  Italy have not lost in 35 games in a row (27W, 8N), equaling the longest streak without a defeat for a senior European national team established by Spain in the 2007-2009 period. On the world level, however, only Brazil between 1993 and 1996 did better (36).  Italy have drawn their last three games, only twice in the 21st century have they recorded more draws in a row: in November 2013 and June 2005 (both four).  Italy have scored 17 games in a row, the last time they recorded a longer streak of games with goals to the credit was in May 2004 (19 in that case).

Italy had the chance to take the lead.  In the 53rd minute, Jorginho failed to convert a penalty  saved by Switzerland goalkeeper Sommer  in the bottom right corner.  The penalty was conceded by Ricardo Rodríguez after a foul on Domenico Berardi inside the penalty area.
