Milan defeats Inter 3-1 as Diego Moreira stars in derby

Diego Moreira produced a match-winning display as Milan secured a 3-1 triumph over Inter in the Derby della Madonnina, stretching their streak of victories against their city opponents to four in a row. The winger found the net once and set up goals for Christian Pulisic and Adrien Rabiot, while Inter endured their first loss of the Serie A campaign.

The outcome followed Milan’s 4-2 setback against Bologna earlier in the week. Inter came into the derby sitting at the summit of the standings after late wins against Fiorentina and Venezia, but Cristian Chivu’s men were unable to hold their ground on the field.

Milan took the lead in under four minutes. Moreira advanced along the right flank before sending in a cross that Pulisic headed in from close distance, guiding the ball into the far bottom corner.

The Rossoneri increased their cushion through a cleverly executed set-piece. Moreira’s corner was played short to Rabiot, who had drifted away from his marker and struck first time with the inside of his left foot, beating the far post.

Inter pulled one back from another corner. Manuel Akanji glanced the ball on at the near post, enabling Alessandro Bastoni to head in from six yards and claim his first goal in the Milan derby.

That goal shifted the momentum, with Mike Maignan called upon to make several crucial stops. He pushed Hakan Calhanoglu’s fierce attempt over the crossbar and later produced a superb one-handed reflex save to keep out Djed Spence from close range.

Milan 3-1 Inter: Moreira clinches derby triumph

Moreira capped his excellent performance by netting Milan’s third from a free kick. He lifted the ball over the wall and into the near corner, with goalkeeper Josep Martinez unable to get a clear view of the strike.

Inter kept pushing for another goal but found it difficult to carve out clear chances. Carlos Augusto headed wide from a Calhanoglu delivery, while Marcus Thuram failed to connect properly with another cross to genuinely test Maignan.

A brief penalty debate also arose when the referee initially awarded a spot kick after a Henrikh Mkhitaryan cross seemed to hit Mario Gila’s arm. VAR revealed that the ball had struck the defender’s chest, and the call was reversed.

Milan devoted much of the last 20 minutes to protecting their advantage, but Inter were unable to break through. Instead, Josep Martinez had to tip an Alphadjo Cisse attempt away from the far top corner, and the visitors departed without a result.
