Serie A Standing BEFORE the game:
Inter, 1st position with 58 points and a positive goal difference of +35
Monza, 20th position with 14 points and a negative goal difference of -24

Inter won the Serie A Week 28 match on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium in Milan, Italy.  Inter achieved a stunning 3-2 comeback victory against Monza in an exciting match. This win is vital for Inter as they maintain their lead in the standings with 61 points.

Monza started strong, with Birindelli scoring in the 32nd minute and Keita doubling the lead just before halftime. However, Arnautovic’s header in the 46th minute sparked Inter’s comeback. In the second half, Calhanoglu scored the winning goal in the 64th minute, and an own goal by Kyriakopoulos in the 77th minute sealed the match. Thuram came close to scoring again, hitting the post in the 83rd minute, while Zielinski unfortunately picked up an injury.

On the other hand, Monza is desperate for a victory to boost their chances of survival, sitting at the bottom of the table with just 14 points.

The Match …

What a shocker at the Meazza! Monza struck first in the 32nd minute when Samuele Birindelli found the net with a precise right-footed shot into the bottom left corner. Dany Mota set him up with a delightful backheel assist, allowing Birindelli to slip into space in the box and calmly finish past goalkeeper Josep Martinez.

Amazing! In the 44th minute, a determined Monza made their mark at the Meazza. Keita Baldé found the net with a right-footed strike from the left side of the box, sending the ball into the top right corner. Dany Mota provided the assist after a quick counterattack. With plenty of room, Keita unleashed an angled shot from the edge of the area, beating Josep Martinez just under the crossbar. An emotional goal for Baldé scoring against his ex-team.

Inter closed the gap in the 45+1 minute just before halftime. Marko Arnautovic found the net with a close-range header aimed at the center. Denzel Dumfries provided the assist with a well-placed headed pass. Mkhitaryan delivered a cross, Dumfries set up Arnautovic, who then headed the ball in from just a few steps out.

Inter pulled off a fantastic comeback, drawing level at 2-2 in the 64th minute. Hakan Çalhanoglu equalized with a right-footed shot that found the bottom left corner, with Yann Bisseck providing the assist. Bisseck’s setup allowed Calhanoglu to take aim from the edge of the area, and his angled shot left Turati with no opportunity to save it.

Inter has turned the game around, now leading 3-2. In the 77th minute, an own goal by Georgios Kyriakopoulos changed the tide. Carlos Augusto made a run into the box, where a collision occurred between Lautaro Martinez and Kyriakopoulos. The defender inadvertently got the last touch, sending the ball into the net. Turati made a dive to save it, but the ball crossed the goal line.

✅   Stats before the game

We are now at the sixth match between Inter and Monza in Serie A. The Nerazzurri have claimed victory in two of the earlier Lombard derbies against the Brianza team, with two draws and one win for the Biancorossi.

Monza’s only success in four previous encounters at San Siro against Inter and Milan in Serie A (three losses) came during their first meeting at the Meazza in this tournament, where they won 1-0 on April 15, 2023, courtesy of Luca Caldirola’s goal in the 78th minute.

Inter have not won four of their last six games in Serie A (2D, 2P).  As many matches without success as those recorded in the previous 17 games played in the tournament (3D, 1P). In particular, after the 1-1 against Napoli in the last round, the Nerazzurri could draw two matches in a row in the league for the first time in 2024/25 (the last precedent in a single season came on the occasion of the last two matchdays of the last edition of the tournament, against Lazio and Verona).

Inter have won each of their last three home games in Serie A.  They could record four consecutive home wins for the first time in this edition of the tournament; the last precedent dates back to the series of nine consecutive wins at the Meazza recorded between October 2023 and March 2024.

Player Stats

Lautaro Martínez has scored five goals in five appearances against Monza in Serie A; among the teams against which he has played for at least 180 minutes in the tournament (the equivalent of two full matches), only against Salernitana does he boast a better minutes/goal average than against the Biancorossi: one goal every 33′ against the Campanians, one every 67′ against the Brianza team.

Keita Baldé – who scored five goals in 24 appearances for the Nerazzurri in Serie A in 2018/19 – has already scored three goals against Inter in the Italian top flight (less only than the four he scored against Fiorentina and Empoli): two with Sampdoria and one with Lazio. The Nerazzurri could become the first team against which he would score with three different jerseys in the top five European leagues.
