Atalanta ended the UEFA Europa League Round of 16 First Leg with a draw on Wednesday 6 March 2024 at the Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon, Portugal. Many opportunities and many regrets for Atalanta with this draw after great intensity and character in Lisbon. Three posts were hit during the match, many interventions by goalkeeper Israel, and a goal for El Bilal Touré disallowed for offside. Atalanta responded twice hitting the post within sixty seconds of each other in the 24th minute. Holm hit the inside of the post, while Scamacca then hit the post with a right-footed shot. The good thing is that Scamacca got the equalizer goal to save a point. The Second Leg will be played on Thursday 14 March at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo.

Sporting Lisbon took the lead in the 17th minute. Paulinho defeated Atalanta goalkeeper Juan Musso with a left-footed shot to the bottom right corner. The assist is by Trincão.

✅ Stats before the game:  This will be the eighth match between Sporting CP and Atalanta in the main European competitions (2 successes for the Portuguese, three for the Dea and two draws so far); two of these matches were played in the group stage of this Europa League (Sporting-Atalanta 1-2 and Atalanta-Sporting 1-1). All three of Atalanta’s away games in Portugal in European competitions have been against Sporting CP: 3-1 defeat in the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1963/64; 1-1 in the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1987/88 and a success in this Europa League (2-1). Atalanta have lost only two of the 20 matches played in the Europa League (12W, 6D), both in the knockout phase: 2-3 against Borussia Dortmund in February 2018 (in the round of 32) and 0-2 against Leipzig in April 2022 (quarter-finals). Atalanta have lost only one of their last 12 matches (W8, D3) in Europe and are unbeaten in the six played this season. Not considering the preliminary rounds, only once did the Dea manage to score seven consecutive useful results in these competitions: between September 1990 and March 1991, in the UEFA Cup.
