✅    Serie A Standing BEFORE the game:
Napoli, 1st position with 19 points and a positive goal difference of +10
Lecce, 19th position with 5 points and a negative goal difference of -15

Mission accomplished! Napoli triumphed in their Serie A Week 9 match against Lecce on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in Naples, Italy. This victory is crucial as it keeps Napoli firmly in first place in the league standings. With this win, they now have 22 points, leading Inter by 5 points and Juventus by 6, who are set to play tomorrow at San Siro. Lecce, on the other hand, remains in the relegation zone with just 5 points.

Napoli secured another win, albeit by a slim margin, in a challenging match that was decided in the second half thanks to a decisive tap-in from Di Lorenzo. As the game drew to a close, the home team seemed to falter, allowing Lecce to create some threats, but they couldn’t find the equalizer.

They have a strong record against Lecce, remaining unbeaten in their last four encounters (2 wins, 2 draws) and not allowing any goals in the last two matches. Interestingly, Napoli has never achieved three consecutive clean sheets against Lecce in Serie A history.

… the decisive moment

In the 73rd minute, Napoli took the lead as Giovanni Di Lorenzo scored with a right-footed shot from close range, getting past Lecce’s goalkeeper Wladimiro Falcone following a corner that was given after Ylber Ramadani’s mistake. Di Lorenzo, who had a goal disallowed in the first half, could finally celebrate this one, which was enough to clinch the victory and bring joy to the supporters at the Maradona.

Stats before the game

Napoli has amassed 19 points from their first eight matches in this season’s championship, boasting a record of 6 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss. In the history of the three-point win system, they have only surpassed this point total after eight games on three occasions: in the 2017/18 and 2021/22 seasons with 24 points each, and in 2022/23 with 20 points.

Additionally, Napoli has achieved clean sheets in four out of their last five Serie A matches, winning four and drawing one, with a total score of 10-1. Since early September 2024, they have only allowed one goal in Serie A, tying with Juventus for the best defensive record, while only Leipzig in the top five European leagues has performed better with no goals conceded.

Lecce has struggled offensively this season, scoring the least number of goals in the top five European leagues for 2024/25, with just three to their name. Additionally, they have conceded 18 goals, a significant portion of which came in their recent match against Fiorentina. This leaves them with a goal difference of -15, better only than Montpellier, who sit at -18. On the other hand, among the leading teams in the overall standings of the 2024/25 Big 5 European leagues, Napoli stands out as the only team with an average ball possession that ranks outside the top three in their league, sitting at 47.3%, which is the 11th best in Serie A.

Serie A Standing BEFORE the game:
Torino, 9th position with 11 points and a positive goal difference of “0”
Como, 14th position with 9 points and a negative goal difference of -4

Torino won the Serie A Week 9 match against Como on Friday, October 25, 2024, at the Olimpico di Torino Stadium in Turin, Italy.  This victory marks a turning point for Torino. After suffering three straight losses in Serie A against Lazio, Inter, and Cagliari, they were on the brink of a troubling streak. The last time they faced four consecutive defeats under one coach was back in February to March 2018, during Walter Mazzarri’s tenure. Torino secured a win against Como, reclaiming the three points they had been without for more than a month. This victory boosts the Granata to 14 points. Meanwhile, Como’s struggles continue, as they face their second loss in three matches and are now in danger of being surpassed by Monza and Parma, who are set to play against Venezia and Empoli, respectively.

This matchup marked a reunion for the two teams in Serie A after a long gap of 21 years and 154 days, with their last encounter on May 24, 2003, resulting in a 1-0 win for Como at the Sinigaglia.

.. and the goal arrived…

Torino broke the deadlock in the 75th minute. Braunoder attempted a header back-pass to Audero, but it lacked power, giving Njie the chance to sprint past Audero and slot the ball into the unguarded net. This marked the 19-year-old’s first professional goal for Torino.

✅  Stats before the game

Torino have remained unbeaten in 12 of their 13 home games against Como in Serie A (W7 L5), the only away win for the Lariani against the Granata in the tournament dates back to 6 April 1986 (3-1).

Torino are coming off three consecutive defeats in Serie A (vs Lazio, Inter and Cagliari) and under a single coach they have not achieved four consecutive defeats in the league since the period between February and March 2018, under Walter Mazzarri.

Como drew their last league match (1-1 against Parma) and have not recorded two draws in a row in Serie A since February 2003 (against Empoli and Parma in that case).

Como have recorded 17 direct attacks in this championship (intended as actions that start in their own half of the pitch, have at least 50% forward movement and end with a play in the opponent’s area), equal to Napoli and less only than Milan (20) and Atalanta (18).

Torino are the team that have suffered the most shots, both in total (151) and on target (46), as well as being the second team for Expected Goals against in this championship (14.4), behind only Genoa (14.7). After his goal against Cagliari in the last round, Antonio Sanabria (48 – 39 goals and 9 assists) is close to being involved in 50 goals in Serie A; the Paraguayan, however, has not been involved in a goal for at least two consecutive appearances in the competition since May 2023 (a streak that has now reached four).

Serie A Standing BEFORE the game:
Udinese, 8thposition with 13 points and a negative goal difference of -1
Cagliari, 15th position with 8 points and a negative goal difference of -5

Udinese defeated Cagliari in Serie A Week 9 on Friday, October 25, 2024, at the Bluenergy Stadium in Udine, Italy. Historically, Udinese has now triumphed in 28 out of their 57 Serie A encounters with Cagliari, recording 17 draws and 12 losses. This makes Cagliari one of the teams Udinese has had the most success against in the league, alongside Atalanta and Lazio. In their last 10 Serie A meetings, Udinese has remained unbeaten in nine of them, winning six and drawing three. The only victory for Cagliari during this stretch was a narrow 1-0 win on April 21, 2021, in Friuli.

Udinese has secured their fifth victory in nine matches, solidifying their spot in the standings. As they await the outcomes of other games, they climb to fourth place, sharing points with Thiago Motta’s Bianconeri and sitting two points clear of Milan. Meanwhile, Cagliari’s impressive run of four consecutive positive results comes to an end, marking their return to defeat after a month.

Cagliari was left with just 10 players after Antoine Makoumbou received a second yellow card for a foul in the 30th minute, as officiated by Referee Manganiello.

Udinese opened the scoring in the 38th minute when Lorenzo Lucca found the back of the net with a powerful header, beating Cagliari’s goalkeeper Simone Scuffet. The goal was set up by Hassane Kamara, who delivered a precise cross after a corner kick that Scuffet had given away. Lorenzo scored his 4th goal of the season.

Double lead! Udinese found the back of the net again in the 78th minute, thanks to Keinan Davis, who fired a right-footed shot into the top right corner. Jesper Karlström provided the assist.

✅  Stats before the game

Udinese and Cagliari drew both matches last season and only once have they recorded three draws in a row in Serie A: in the period between 1982 and 1983.

Udinese have won three of their four home games in this championship – the only exception being the 2-3 defeat against Inter on 28 September – and have not achieved four wins in their first five home games of the season in Serie A since 2014/15, under the guidance of Andrea Stramaccioni.

Cagliari are unbeaten in their last three Serie A games (W2 D1), after three consecutive defeats without scoring; after their success in the last round (3-2 vs Torino), the Sardinians could get two wins in a row for only the second time in the calendar year 2024 in Serie A (1-0 vs Empoli and 4-2 vs Salernitana in March previously).
