AC Milan, 3rd position with 49 points and a positive goal difference of +22

The big day arrived!  The Milan Derby seeing a fierce battle.  AC Milan claiming the bragging rights to rule in Milan after winning the Serie A Week 24 game “Derby della Madonnina” on Saturday 5 February 2022 at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium in Milan, Italy.  Inter took the lead, and then, AC Milan overturned the result under the leadership of Olivier Giroud scoring the 2 goals for the Rossoneri.  Inter’s last home defeat in Serie A dates back to October 2020 against AC Milan.  For the Rossoneri, it’s the first time to win a Milan Derby in Serie A coming from behind since February 2004.  Giroud becomes the first French player ever to have scored two or more goals in a Serie A match against Inter.

Since the start of the 2020/21 season, Inter have lost only four of the 60 games played in Serie A (44W, 12D), one of which against AC Milan in October 2020 – in the same period the Nerazzurri recorded less than half of the losses of any other formation (followed by Atalanta with nine).

Referee Marco Guida ruled out a goal for Inter in the 10th minute after consulting the VAR. Hakan Çalhanoğlu serves Ivan Perisic on the run. The Croatian crosses to the far post for Dumfries who takes the time from Theo Hernandez and beats goalkeeper Maignan with a header, but the goal is disallowed for offside by Perisic.

Milan is the team against which Inter have drawn more games in Serie A (56), while on the other side no team has beaten AC Milan more times than the Inter (67) – Milan have conceded 247 goals in Serie A against Inter, more than against any other team in the competition.  After the 1-1 draw in the first leg, Inter and Milan could equalize both of their league matches for the first time since 2016/17, when the current Rossoneri coach Stefano Pioli was leading the Nerazzurri.  Inter have lost only one of their last 11 Serie A matches against Milan (2-1 in October 2020 with Ibrahimovic’s brace in the first 16 minutes of play): six Inter wins and four draws complete the set, in which only once did Milan keep a clean sheet.    Inter’s last home defeat in Serie A dates back to October 2020 against AC Milan (28 unbeaten matches): this is the longest streak without home defeats for the Nerazzurri in the competition since the 46 matches between April 2008 and November 2010, Series interrupted against Milan (0-1 signed by Zlatan Ibrahimovic in November 2010).

Genoa continue crying out loud for help.  Genoa failing to win the Serie A Week 23 game against Udinese ending with a goalless draw sharing one point each.  However, we might consider a positive result for Coach Alexander Blessin on his debut with Genoa getting his first point in Italy.  Genoa remain second-bottom in Serie A after their 20th match without a victory reaching 13 points, five behind Venezia who are in the 17th position.

Atalanta failing the mission to win the Serie A Week 23 game ending with a goalless draw against Lazio at the Olimpico di Roma Stadium.   However, Atalanta with this one point keeping up the race to grab the third position.  Atalanta have now remained unbeaten in their last 18 league away games (13W, 5D): the last team to do better in Serie A was Juventus in 2019, when they reached 26 away games without defeat.  Lazio also with the needed victory risking to lose the 6th position.
