✅   What’s happening in Round 20?

The competition for the Scudetto is heating up!   Napoli triumphed over Hellas Verona at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. This win propels Napoli to the top of the standings with 47 points from 20 matches. They are currently four points ahead of Inter, who have two games in hand, and five points clear of Atalanta, who have one game less than Napoli. Meanwhile, Verona sits at 19 points, just a point above third-from-bottom Cagliari. This was a solid performance from Conte’s squad, who dealt with Hellas Verona effectively, scoring once in each half and missing several chances to increase their lead.

The highly anticipated Derby between Torino and Juventus concluded in a draw. It was a fiercely contested match, with all the action taking place in the first half. The Bianconeri took the lead with a stunning left-footed shot from Yildiz, but the Granata equalized late in the half thanks to a fantastic goal from Vlasic. The second half was filled with determination and shifts in momentum, with the best opportunities falling to Thiago Motta’s side (who saw both him and Vanoli sent off). Yildiz, Nico Gonzalez, and Koopmeiners all came close to scoring. Juventus remains stuck in a rut, unable to shake off their negative streak and trailing Lazio by 3 points. Meanwhile, Torino also struggles to find a win, managing to secure a point above the relegation zone.

Genoa secured a narrow victory over Parma at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium. The Grifone triumphed 1-0, with Morten Frendrup scoring the decisive goal, aided by a deflection from Del Prato. This single goal was enough for the home side to claim a crucial win in their battle for survival, pushing them further away from the relegation zone. Meanwhile, Parma’s struggles continued as they dropped more points, having previously drawn 0-0 with Torino, which mirrored Genoa’s scoreless match against Lecce.

AC Milan and Cagliari played to a draw at the famous San Siro Stadium.  Fresh off their triumph in the Italian Super Cup, Milan was keen to build on that success and move closer to the Champions League positions. However, they were held to a draw at home by a resilient Cagliari side. The Rossoneri controlled the first half but only managed to break the deadlock early in the second half with a goal from Morata. Cagliari quickly responded with an equalizer from Zortea.  Cagliari now sit on 18 points, while Milan matches Bologna with 28 points.

Genoa secured a narrow victory over Parma in Serie A Week 20 on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium. The Grifone triumphed 1-0, with Morten Frendrup scoring the decisive goal, aided by a deflection from DelPrato. Genoa has now won their last two Serie A matches against Parma, with previous victories of 2-1 in March 2021 and 1-0 last November. Notably, they have yet to achieve three consecutive league wins against the Gialloblù.

In the upcoming round, Genoa will take on Roma, while Parma will go up against Venezia.

Genoa took the lead in the 65th minute when Morten Frendrup scored with a right-footed shot from the left side of the box, sending the ball into the bottom right corner! The Grifone benefited from the impressive teamwork between Miretti and Frendrup. The former Juventus player provided a brilliant assist, allowing the Danish midfielder to trick goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, aided by a deflection from DelPrato.

 Stats before the game

Genoa has triumphed in their last two Serie A encounters with Parma, winning 2-1 in March 2021 and 1-0 last November. Interestingly, they have never managed to secure three consecutive victories against the Gialloblù in the top division. Additionally, the last instance of the Grifone achieving two clean sheets in a row against the Ducali in this league was between February and October 2013, with results of 0-0 and 1-0. Among teams they have faced at least 30 times in Serie A, Parma has only suffered fewer defeats against Torino (seven) than they have against Genoa (ten).

Serie A Standing BEFORE the game:
Parma, 15th position with 18 points and a negative goal difference of -9
Torino, 12th position with 20 points and a negative goal difference of -5

On Sunday, January 5, 2025, Torino and Parma ended the Serie A Week 19 with a draw at the Olimpico di Torino Stadium in Turin, Italy. Torino and Parma each earn a point, bringing Torino’s total to 21 points and allowing Parma to level with Verona at 19 points. The match concludes in a goalless draw, with Torino showing more aggression and creating chances, particularly in the first half thanks to Adams. In the second half, Parma nearly took the lead when Mihaila struck the post, but as the match drew to a close, it was Torino who almost clinched the win, only for Suzuki to make a crucial save.

Stats before the game

Torino have won their last two Serie A games against Parma, as many wins as they had in their previous 16 matches against this opponent in the competition (D5 L9).
Parma have remained unbeaten in seven of their last nine Serie A away games against Torino (W3 D4), although they have only kept a clean sheet once in that period, on 1 December 2002 (4-0).

In the last 13 matches between Torino and Parma in Serie A, 40 goals have been scored, an average of 3.1 per game; despite this, the Granata have kept a clean sheet in five of their last eight games against the Gialloblù in the top flight, including the two most recent.
Torino have won only two of their last 13 Serie A games (D3 L8); in fact, from the sixth matchday of the championship onwards, only Monza (seven) have obtained fewer points in the standings than the Granata (nine, like Venezia).

Buy Serie A tickets

Parma won their last league game against Monza, after a run of three consecutive defeats; the last time the dukes recorded two consecutive wins in Serie A dates back to July 2020, against Napoli and Brescia, with Roberto D’Aversa on the bench.
Torino have remained unbeaten in their first match of the new calendar year in Serie A in each of the last five years (4W, 1D) – one of these was against Parma, a 3-0 win in 2021, with Marco Giampaolo on the bench.

Parma have scored five of their 25 goals in Serie A this season from the 90th minute onwards – more than any other team in the current tournament – excluding own goals, three of the dukes’ five most recent goals in the tournament have come in this time frame (against Lazio, Hellas Verona and Monza).
