Lecce sacked Coach Roberto D’Aversa on Monday 11 March 2024. The sacking came after the events that occurred at the end of the Serie A Week 28 Lecce 0 –  1 Hellas Verona match on Sunday 10 March at the Via del Mare Stadium.

The reason? There is an unacceptable act made by D’Aversa for headbutting a Verona player after their game. Different videos are showing D’Aversa walking towards opposing player Thomas Henry and then appearing to strike him with his head making him fall to the ground before charging at the coach. Referee Daniele Chiffi gave a red card to both Henry and D’Aversa for the incident. ( All happening after the game was over.)

The Club responded immediately with a statement condemning Roberto D’Aversa’s actions.

“After the events that occurred at the end of the Lecce – Verona match, U.S. Lecce announces that it has relieved coach D’Aversa of his duties,” the club said.

According to Sky Italia, Aversa apologized for the incident saying, “I would like to apologize to everyone and at the same time reconstruct the sad and unpleasant episode that saw me as a negative protagonist at the end of Lecce-Verona. I came into contact head-to-head with Henry, but I did not hit the Veronese player with a headbutt, nor did I receive one from him. It was a physical contact, a bad example, an unsportsmanlike image resulting from great tension and adrenaline which, however, must not and do not want to be my excuses or mitigating factors.”

Lecce, up to Week 28, is in the 16th position with 25 points and a negative goal difference of -20.

Italian Soccer Serie A

👉    Hello, my friends. Here are the 2023-2024 Italian Serie A Week 28 RESULTS / Twenty-eighth Round on Friday 8, Saturday 9, Sunday 10, and Monday 11 March 2024.  Inter is the sole leader with 75 points followed in the 2nd position with  57 points.  Inter have a +18 lead and are closer to the 20th Scudetto in their history.  Inter have picked up 75 points in the current league season, only once in Serie A’s history a team gained more points after 28 matches, that is Inter in 2006/07 under Roberto Mancini (76).

A difficult but overall deserved victory for Inter, who only needed a header from Bisseck to get the full 3 points. In the second half, Thiago Motta’s team put Inzaghi’s team under pressure but were unable to break through the Nerazzurri wall. Three points bring the Scudetto even closer, while the rossoblù slow down their pursuit of the Champions League but remain firmly in fourth place. Bologna falls at home for the first time since last August 21st, Milan had been the only team capable of beating the rossoblù at the Dall’Ara.

AC Milan keeping up the race to remain within the European zone by winning the Serie A Week 28 game against Empoli. This is the second consecutive 1-0 in the league and third victory in a row between Serie A and the Europa League for Milan, which thus rises to 59 points. Second consecutive 1-0 defeat, however, for Empoli, who remain on 25 points, one more than third-last Frosinone.  A goal from Christian Pulisic is enough for Milan to win these three golden points.

Hellas Verona conquered the Via del Mare Stadium beating Lecce. Three very important points for Verona because they leave the relegation zone of the standings flying from the 18th to the 13th position. Lecce goes down and becomes 16th: not a great period for D’Aversa’s team, fresh from 4 defeats and 1 draw in the last 5 games.

Torino remained unbeaten in both seasonal matches against Napoli (W1, D1) for the first time since the 2008/09 season (two victories in that case, with Walter Novellino on the bench in the first leg and Giancarlo Camolese in the return) .

Since his arrival at Cagliari (1 February 2024), no Italian footballer has scored more goals than Gianluca Gaetano (three) in Serie A TIM (Riccardo Orsolini also scores three).

Eldor Shomurodov returned to scoring in Serie A TIM 342 days later, on 2 April 2023 with Spezia, against Salernitana; the attacker scored his second brace in the competition today after the first which came with Genoa on 15 May 2021 (v Atalanta).

Sassuolo regained the victory in Serie A TIM that had been missing since 6 January (1-0 vs Fiorentina) – since then they had collected one point in eight matchdays.

Frosinone’s only shot on target during the match came in the 94th minute with Luca Mazzitelli.

Serie A Standing BEFORE the game:
Hellas Verona, 18th position with 23 points and a negative goal difference of -12
Lecce, 14th position with 25 points and a negative goal difference of -19

Hellas Verona won the Serie A Week 28 on Sunday 10 March 2024 at the Via del Mare Stadium in Lecce, Italy. Three very important points for Verona which leaves the relegation zone of the standings flying from the 18th to the 13th position. Lecce goes down and becomes 16th: not a great period for D’Aversa’s team, fresh from 4 defeats and 1 draw in the last 5 games. To make matters worse, D’Aversa was sent off at the end of the match for a headbutt to Thomas Michel David Henry from Verona, who was also got a red card in the 98th minute after a fight with Pongracic.

Verona’s aggressive approach in the first half hour of play broke the deadlock with Folorunsho: the shot was deflected however by Baschirotto, who was decisive in sending the ball into the corner where Falcone couldn’t reach. During the match, Lecce improved especially towards the end of the first half, dangerous with a crossbar hit by Almqvist and a turn by Kristovic saved by Montipò.

Hellas Verona took the lead in the 17th minute. Michael Folorunsho defeated Lecce goalkeeper Falcone with a left-footed shot to the bottom left corner. The assist is by Tomás Suslov.

✅   Stats before the game: Hellas Verona are unbeaten in eight matches against Lecce in Serie A (5W, 3D): this is one of the two longest open series of consecutive matches without defeat against a single opponent for the Scaligeri in the top division (as against Cagliari). After a series of three consecutive victories against Hellas Verona between Serie A and B, Lecce has not found any success in the five most recent matches against the Gialloblù in the league (1D, 4L) and in particular has not found the goal in four of these (just two goals scored, in the 2-2 achieved in the first leg of this tournament). Hellas Verona have won their last two Serie A away matches against Lecce, after having failed to find any success in the previous six (D2, L4): the only time they have recorded three consecutive away successes against a single opponent in the competition it was against Pisa, between 1982 and 1985. Lecce have conceded goals in each of their last 22 Serie A matches, already their longest losing run in a single season in the competition; from an offensive point of view, however, the Apulian team has not found the net in seven of the last 11 championship matches, a period in which they have won just once (2N, 8P).

👉 LECCE (4-3-3): Falcone; Gendrey, Baschirotto, Pongracic, Gallo; Gonzalez, Ramadani, Oudin; Almqvist, Krstovic, Banda

👉 Lineup HELLAS VERONA (4-2-3-1): Montipò; Tchatchoua, Magnani, Coppola, Cabal; Duda, Serdar, Folorunsho, Suslov, Lazovic; Noslin
