Inter’s past meetings with Ukrainian sides

MILAN – Inter head into tomorrow’s Europa League Group F match against Dnipro looking for the points needed to seal their spot in the last 32. It will be their eighth meeting with a Ukrainian side, following previous match-ups with Dynamo Kiev, Shakhtar Donetsk.

The first game dates back to September 2003, when Hector Cuper’s side hosted Dynamo Kiev at the Meazza in the group stage of the 2003/04 Champions League. Adani’s opener and an injury-time winner by Vieri helped Inter secure a 2-1 triumph.

Two years later Zanetti and Co. were pitted against Shakhtar Donetsk in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round. After a 2-0 victory in Ukraine (Martins 69, Adriano 80), a 1-1 draw (Recoba 12, Elano 25) in the second leg back in Milan was enough to put the Nerazzurri into the hat for the group stage.

The most recent encounter with a Ukrainian team before this season brings back sweet memories for Inter fans. In 2009/10 José Mourinho’s side were paired with Dynamo Kiev once again, in the Champions League group stage. The first game in San Siro finished 2-2, with Stankovic (35) and Samuel (47) cancelling out Mikhalik’s strike (5) and a Lucio own goal (39). Then in the reverse fixture, on an icy night in Kiev with qualification in the balance, Mourinho’s men overturned Shevchenko’s fortuitous first-half opener with a thrilling late comeback: two goals in the dying minutes by Milito and Sneijder proved to be a key turning point for Inter as they headed towards their date with destiny.

Here are all of Inter’s previous results against Ukrainian opposition:

30/09/2003 – Inter 2-1 Dynamo Kiev (Adani 22, Fedorov 34, Vieri 90+1)
10/12/2003 – Dynamo Kiev 1-1 Inter (Adani 73, Rincon 86)
10/08/2005 – Shakhtar Donetsk 0-2 Inter (Martins 69, Adriano 80)
24/08/2005 – Inter 1-1 Shakhtar Donetsk (Recoba 12, Elano 25)
20/10/2009 – Inter 2-2 Dynamo Kiev (Mikhalik 5, Stankovic 35, Lucio og 39, Samuel 51)
04/11/2009 – Dynamo Kiev 2-1 Inter (Shevchenko 21, Milito 88, Sneijder 90+1)
18/09/2014 – Dnipro-Inter 0-1 (D’Ambrosio 73)

UEL, Juan Jesus: “An honour to be coached by Mancini”

APPIANO GENTILE – Juan Jesus joined Roberto Mancini at this afternoon’s news conference to field questions from journalists ahead of Inter v Dnipro.

The Brazilian defender began by commenting on the change of formation. “I felt comfortable with four at the back. We made a few mistakes but I think that’s normal considering we spent the last year and a half playing with a three-man defence. We’re trying to get to grips with the new system quickly so that it all comes more naturally to us.”

He was asked what it’s like being coached by Mancini: “He’s a great coach and he was a great player too. It’s an honour for me, I can learn lots from him.”

Juan Jesus has racked up more minutes on the pitch than any other outfield player this season but the 23-year-old doesn’t seem to be suffering from fatigue. He said: “I’m here to do my bit for the team and if the gaffer wants me to I’ll be happy to play every game. My physique enables me to recover quickly.”
