Inter’s past meetings with Ukrainian sides

MILAN – Inter head into tomorrow’s Europa League Group F match against Dnipro looking for the points needed to seal their spot in the last 32. It will be their eighth meeting with a Ukrainian side, following previous match-ups with Dynamo Kiev, Shakhtar Donetsk.

The first game dates back to September 2003, when Hector Cuper’s side hosted Dynamo Kiev at the Meazza in the group stage of the 2003/04 Champions League. Adani’s opener and an injury-time winner by Vieri helped Inter secure a 2-1 triumph.

Two years later Zanetti and Co. were pitted against Shakhtar Donetsk in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round. After a 2-0 victory in Ukraine (Martins 69, Adriano 80), a 1-1 draw (Recoba 12, Elano 25) in the second leg back in Milan was enough to put the Nerazzurri into the hat for the group stage.

The most recent encounter with a Ukrainian team before this season brings back sweet memories for Inter fans. In 2009/10 José Mourinho’s side were paired with Dynamo Kiev once again, in the Champions League group stage. The first game in San Siro finished 2-2, with Stankovic (35) and Samuel (47) cancelling out Mikhalik’s strike (5) and a Lucio own goal (39). Then in the reverse fixture, on an icy night in Kiev with qualification in the balance, Mourinho’s men overturned Shevchenko’s fortuitous first-half opener with a thrilling late comeback: two goals in the dying minutes by Milito and Sneijder proved to be a key turning point for Inter as they headed towards their date with destiny.

Here are all of Inter’s previous results against Ukrainian opposition:
