The Azzurri had a morning session of lessons following the day’s first training session where they met UEFA chief refereeing officer Pierluigi Collina in order to study the rule changes introduced by the IFAB (International Football Association Board). The updates to the rules went live on Wednesday 1st June and they will therefore apply to Euro 2016 in France.

Europe’s governing body has held meetings to keep all national sides competing in the finals of Euro 2016 up-to-date on the matter and today’s session was held at the training base at Coverciano. “I have participated in meetings with other national sides and I have to say the truth, today there was a lot of good interaction because I saw players who were very interested in understanding the terms I was talking about,” said the former referee from Viareggio. “These meetings allow footballers to better understand how referees interpret things. Players can therefore do their job at the highest level and referees also.”

Collina demonstrated the most recent changes to the rules with special focus on the so-called ‘triple sanction’. In other words, an outfield player or goalkeeper at Euro 2016 who makes an honest attempt to play the ball inside the area but arrives late and commits a foul, without it being violent, will no longer be punished with a red card, the conceding of a penalty and a suspension for the next game. Instead, they will only be punished with a booking and the awarding of a penalty kick. Other changes demonstrated included: The removal of automatic bookings for handball when it interrupts opposition play, the option for injured players to stay on the field of play if treatment is brief and punishment for challenges in which a player wins the ball in a tackle but also jeopardises the health of the opponent.

There was another UEFA programme immediately after on the subject of match fixing. Director from the FIGC’s competition office Giovanni Spitaleri showed the Azzurri regulations that exist in France which are expected to be followed in Italy.

There was another double session today for the Azzurri who are still working hard on the training ground at the National Training Centre in Coverciano with just over a week to go before the European Championships. Graziano Pellè has been training as normal after suffering a slight knee injury yesterday. The Italy team will test themselves against the Empoli academy tomorrow at 17:00 before travelling to Verona on Sunday ahead of their final warm-up friendly against Finland on Monday (ko 20:45 CEST). The Azzurri will leave for Montpellier on Wednesday 8th June.

 
Daniele De Rossi will be joining his teammates on the flight to France with the second highest number of caps in the squad and the highest number of international goals. A World Cup winner in 2006, the midfielder is one of the side’s senior players but the Roma man admitted that he was worried about not making the cut right up until the squad was announced. “On other occasions, I was sure of being selected”, De Rossi told the press conference, “Even if I missed the last two friendlies, in my heart I knew that I would be part of the team whereas with the injuries that I’ve had this season, I could have been a bit of a risk for the coach and I knew that even the training match on Thursday would be decisive because I had to show that I was fit”.

The call-up is just the start: “My objective is to perform well at the Euros and then to win it. I’m in excellent physical condition despite the slight stress on my tendon that I’ve been dealing with for some time – it’s been a problem area for me. We’re working really hard and I hope that the team’s fitness levels can be our secret weapon at these championships.

He is a player Antonio Conte can count on as a coach who has always been convinced that hard work and sweat are the foundations of success. “As a coach, he is brilliant at motivating the group,” said De Rossi. “He knows how to hit certain notes. We are certainly not among the favourites for Euro 2016 but we are a good team, organised and we have the potential to beat anyone.” De Rossi was very close to Andrea Pirlo who was for many years a key friend in the changing room: “I miss him like all of Italian football does,” added De Rossi. The Giallorossi midfielder is also standing by Thiago Motta after he received some criticism after being handed the number ten shirt. “From a technical perspective, he is not inferior to any of the great players who have worn this shirt, perhaps he is the only one here who deserves the number 10,” added De Rossi.

His connection to the Azzurri shirt has always been very strong and it wouldn’t be like De Rossi to say goodbye to the national side. “I don’t see a problem where my contribution to the team expires, the next coach will decide when the time is right. Sometimes, you make a decision because you don’t want to be dropped out of pride, but I don’t have this problem. I will always leave my door open to the national side.”

Following the presentation of the final 23-man squad for Euro 2016 as broadcast live on Rai 1’s show ‘Sogno Azzurro’, the Azzurri arrived at Coverciano’s national training centre on a Frecciarossa 1000 train made available by Trenitalia. The television programme topped the prime time figures with 4,242,000 viewers and a 17,20% market share. The Azzurri posed for their official photos this morning with their Puma kits and Scervino tailored suits before the first of two training sessions on the day. The team returned to the training pitch in the afternoon to prepare for the friendly match with Finland on Monday 6th June in Verona at 20:45 CET. The Finland fixture is the final warm-up match before the team travels to Montpellier on Wednesday 8th June.

Antonio Conte announced the official 23-man squad for UEFA EURO 2016 during tonight’s TV show “Sogno Azzurro”. Marco Benassi Alex Meret, Daniele Rugani and Davide Zappacosta have been listed on stand-by too.

The Azzurri have arrived at the Rai Auditorium with the new Pandazzurri, the special edition of the Fiat Panda created ahead of the upcoming European Championship, and will then travel to Coverciano with the Trenitalia Frecciarossa 1000 train. Italy will attend their final training camp at the federal centre before their last friendly against Finland (Verona, 6th June, 20:45 CEST). Then on 8th June, the squad will depart for Montpellier, where the Azzurri will be based during the competition.

The Azzurri find themselves in Group E. They will open their tournament against Belgium in Lyon on 13th June (21:00 CEST), before facing Sweden in Toulouse on 17th June (15:00 CEST) and finally the Republic of Ireland on 22nd June (21:00 CEST).
