Antonio Conte ha reso noto l’elenco dei 23 convocati per la Fase Finale del Campionato Europeo in programma dal prossimo 10 giugno in Francia: l’annuncio del Ct è arrivato in serata nel corso di ‘Sogno Azzurro’, la trasmissione di Rai 1 che ha presentato in diretta televisiva al pubblico italiano i giocatori inseriti nella lista ufficiale inviata alla UEFA. Saranno aggregati alla squadra anche Meret, Rugani, Benassi e Zappacosta.

Arrivati negli studi dell’Auditorium Rai del Foro Italico a bordo delle nuove vetture Pandazzurri, i 23 convocati saranno ripresi dalle telecamere Rai anche al momento di salire sul Frecciarossa 1000, il treno ad alta velocità di Trenitalia che li porterà al Centro Tecnico Federale di Coverciano, dove continueranno ad allenarsi in vista dell’amichevole con la Finlandia in programma il 6 giugno a Verona e della partenza fissata nella serata dell’8 giugno per Montpellier, quartier generale della Nazionale in Francia.

Gli Azzurri, inseriti nel Gruppo E, faranno il loro esordio nel Campionato Europeo il 13 giugno (ore 21) a Lione contro il Belgio, il 17 (ore 15) affronteranno la Svezia a Tolosa e il 22 giugno (ore 21) se la vedranno con la Repubblica d’Irlanda a Lille nell’ultima gara del girone.

In attesa della partita amichevole Italia-Finlandia, che si giocherà allo stadio “Bentegodi” di Verona il 6 giugno e che sarà l’ultimo test per gli Azzurri prima della partenza per l’Europeo, il Comune di Verona, in accordo con la FIGC, ha promosso una serie di eventi collaterali che si terranno dal 31 maggio al 5 giugno. Le iniziative sono state realizzate in collaborazione con le società di calcio Hellas Verona e Chievo Verona e con il sostegno delle aziende partecipate Agsm, Amia, Agec e Atv.
La Nazionale torna a Verona, per l’occasione città Azzurra, dopo 27 anni e troverà ad accoglierla una vera e propria festa di sport.

Martedì 31 maggio, alle ore 18.30, nella sala convegni della Gran Guardia, presentazione della biografia dell’ex campione Franco Causio, in collaborazione con Sporting Club Verona

Giovedì 2 giugno, Festa della Repubblica, discesa in Adige in gommone, con la collaborazione di Adige Rafting e Canoa Club Verona e associazione Ex Calciatori Hellas Verona onlus: dalle ore 18 circa, per un’ora, 11 gommoni sui quali saliranno atleti di ieri e di oggi, scenderanno lungo il fiume per arrivare alla Dogana dei Filippini da dove, lungo un percorso organizzato, verrà spinta una grande palla gonfiabile, di circa 2 metri di diametro, fino in piazza Bra, per l’incontro alle 19.15 con i ragazzi de “La grande Sfida”. Seguirà l’animazione, le degustazioni de “L’aperitivo Azzurro” e l’illuminazione con le gradazioni del tricolore di Palazzo Barbieri e del Palazzo della Gran Guardia, grazie alla collaborazione di Agsm (in caso di maltempo l’iniziativa sarà posticipata a venerdì 3 giugno).

Sabato 4 e domenica 5 giugno, dalle 9.30 alle 18, esposizione delle Coppe del Mondo a Palazzo Barbieri e allestimento di un villaggio azzurro anche con un campetto di calcio in piazza Bra, dove verranno organizzati tornei durante il fine settimana, con la partecipazione di ex glorie del calcio. Sabato 4 giugno, alle ore 19, aperitivo sulla Torre dei Lamberti, grazie alla collaborazione di Agec. Per tutta la durata della manifestazione le vetrine del centro storico saranno allestite con i colori della nazionale e parteciperanno al concorso “Vetrina Azzurra” di Confesercenti e Confcommercio.

The Italy national team and the whole Azzurri delegation will take part in tonight’s TV show “Sogno Azzurro”. Coach Antonio Conte will announce the official 23-man squad for UEFA EURO 2016 during the show. The selected Azzurri will be introduced to the public and the TV cameras will accompany them after the show as they take the train to Coverciano for their final training camp days before their final friendly against Finland (Verona, 6th June, 20:45 CEST). The squad will then depart for Montpellier, where the Azzurri will be based during the competition, on 8th June.

Italy had their first test  ahead of EURO 2016 in a friendly against Scotland at the Ta’ Quali stadium in Malta. Conte will be naming his 23-man squad for EURO 2016 on Tuesday. Graziano Pellè scored the deciding goal and his fifth goal for Italy in a 1-0 win. Pellè also scored in the country two years ago as the Azzurri triumphed against Malta in a European Championship qualifier. More important than the result was the performance, as the Italian team put in the kind of display their manager had demanded of them. The friendly gave Conte the chance to also have a look at a few unproven talents, in order to decide who should make it into his final squad.

Thiago Motta and Montolivo began on the bench as De Rossi started the game in midfield on his return from injury. Italy lined up in a 3-5-2 formation: Buffon in goal, a back three of Barzagli, Bonucci and Chiellini. The midfield consisted of Candreva, Florenzi, De Rossi, Giaccherini and Darmian. Pellè and Eder were Conte’s two options up front. The Azzurri started well and had two good chances after seven minutes, firstly Marshall was needed to save from Candreva’s free kick, before the ball fell to Giaccherini on the rebound, however, he couldn’t get the ball past the Scottish goalkeeper.

After a quiet start in the early stages, Italy started imposing themselves on the game and caused Scotland problems. In the 23rd minute, Candreva pulled the ball back for Giaccherini twelve yards out but he couldn’t keep his shot down. Giacherrini was in the action once again in the 28th minute, firing wide after good work from De Rossi. This was the best chance for Conte’s men in the first half, who were lacking the luck they needed to take the lead before the break. Buffon was untroubled in the Italy goal.

The team came out unchanged after the restart but with a different mentality. They pushed forwards as Scotland attempted to calm the game down. Pellè broke the deadlock in the 57th minute after a good cross-field pass from De Rossi found Eder, who was able to tee up the Southampton striker, who made no mistake from 18 yards out. Conte rung the changes following the goal, bringing on Insigne, Bernardeschi, Parolo, Jorginho and Zaza for Eder, Darmian, Candreva, De Rossi and Pellè.

Just as in the last friendly against Spain, Conte placed Bernardeschi, Insigne and Zaza together in attack. However the action took place at the other end. Scotland looked to make Italy pay for their missed chances in the 78th minute, as a mistake from the Azzurri lead to Ritchie getting the ball in the box. Fortunately he could only find the side netting though with a powerful effort.

In the 80th minute, Conte brought off Giaccherini for Bonaventura but the match continued with no further incident before the referee blew the final whistle.

“We were very committed but the pitch wasn’t great and didn’t help us. We are working hard and have to continue on the same path. I liked the way my players applied themselves, they showed a lot of determination and a will to win. There is still work to do and we know that we have a tough road ahead of us. It is important that we acknowledge that,” said Conte following his team’s 1-0 win against Scotland, who are ranked 40th in the FIFA World Ranking, however they were able to beat the Czech Republic and Denmark in their last two matches. There was a number of questions for the Italian coach following the match: “Will my team be ready for the first game against Belgium? I cannot see into the future but we can take many positives, for example, we didn’t concede or even allow them a shot on target. We also finally managed to get back to winning ways. Will I sleep easily after a match like this? I always struggle to sleep after matches like this because of the adrenaline. How will De Rossi pull up after his performance? We will have to see…”

Graziano Pellè scored the winner and his fifth goal for the Azzurri: “I’m happy, I must be lucky in Malta. The team? We have a lot of room for improvement, we are working a lot on both a tactical and physical level and we know what our aims are that we want to reach. However, words don’t matter anymore we have to prove ourselves.  We will try to start the European Championship as well as we can. We don’t like to make excuses but in these next few days we will continue to work hard. We are just missing that little bit of brilliance. We can definitely play better. We have the right mentality and want to stay positive; once we find that bit of brilliance we will be ready. This friendly was an important part of our preparation and we must keep on training to put ourselves in the best possible position to do well.”

Darmian is on the same page: “It was a week of hard work, we didn’t play as well as we know we can and can improve. We will prepare as well as we can to be ready for the European Championship. There is a lot of room for improvement. We are a close-knit group but we still have to keep our cool and work hard. When we go out onto the pitch we have to give 100 percent, if we do that we will have the quality to record some good results. Our strengths? We will show them on the pitch. We will have to continue to work hard during the week to make sure that we are prepared.
