The
Giallorossi coach spoke to reporters in Trigoria 24 hours before his
team’s visit to the Stadio Sant’Elia in Week 32 of Serie A.
CAGLIARI
“I always say that it’s hard to win away from home and that’s even
truer in this case, with Roma not having won at Cagliari for years.
However, the stats are there to be rewritten and that’s what we have to
do tomorrow. Daniele Conti? He’s a good midfielder, but Cagliari have
other good players too. We must try to make life difficult for them.
Harrying our opponents high up the field? We always do that at a certain
point of the game, it’s a strategy we use to be able to strike our
opponents more easily.”
THE CHASE
“We’re eight points off top spot and we have to make sure that come
17:00 tomorrow it’s five. We’ll just concentrate on our own path. Conte
and I are similar? I can’t comment on people I don’t know very well. The
best people to ask about a coach is his players – they’re the ones who
know the man they work with every day.”
TARGETS
“Our target was to get back into Europe and I think we’ve managed that.
Now it’s natural that we should adjust our sights and aim a bit higher.
We want to qualify for the Champions League group stage without going
through the preliminaries, by finishing first or second. First place
doesn’t depend on us alone but second is in our own hands. When I first
came here I said I wanted to make our fans happy and when I saw Taddei
celebrating with the Curva I realized that we’ve managed to do just
that. We have to keep believing right up to the end, keep moving forward
and try to climb as high as possible because the season isn’t over yet.
At the end of the year we’ll talk about next season and see what we can
do.”
TRANSFER MARKET
“Last summer I worked very closely with Sabatini and it will be the
same thing this summer. Nobody is perfect in the transfer market, you
can never get 100% of signings right. Lots of factors come into play,
including how adaptable the player is. Next season’s roster will be
different to this year’s. We want the best Roma team possible every year
and the one we have this year isn’t half bad.”

“Adem is a rough diamond just as Hazard was when he arrived at Lille.
Four years on he’s a totally different player. Adem is working hard and I
haven’t forgotten that he’s scored five goals and made several assists.
He’s a big talent.”
NAINGGOLAN
“I’ve spoken to him and this is understandably a special game for him
emotionally speaking. I know he’ll do his best to win with Roma while
showing total respect for his former team-mates.”
DE ROSSI
“Daniele is a magnificent player, one of the best midfielders I’ve ever
seen. He plays lots of balls in the system I use: he has the advantage
of sitting deep and having all the action in front of him. That’s where
he can give the best of himself. Pjanic, for example, plays in a
position where he has to take more risks.”
Fifteenth
place in the Serie A. The fourth worst attack in the league with 29
goals scored – only 6 more than rock-bottom Catania, who claim the
fewest scored so far. With 41 goals allowed, they have the number 10
ranked defense, level with that of Parma.
These are the stats that describe Roma’s next opponent: Diego Lopez’s
Cagliari. But while it certainly doesn’t seem like ‘Mission Impossible’
to the Giallorossi, it’s by no means a game to be taken lightly.
We can also add that the Sardinian side is dangerous most of all when
playing at home: 25 of their total 32 points have come at the Stadio
Sant’Elia. On their own turf their record is: 16 games played, 7 wins, 4
draws, 5 losses, 22 goals scored and 23 let in.
The Rossoblù won their most recent home game against Verona 1-0. It’s
their only victory in their last 5 matches, with the other results being
3 losses and a draw over those 450 minutes (not including injury time).
Cagliari have 7 fewer points compared to last season at this stage,
when they were sitting with 39 points and mathematically safe from
relegation.
The players who have surpassed the 2,000-minute mark are defenders
Astori and Rossettini, and midfielders Conti and Dessena. No forward has
reached this milestone yet this season. The most utilized players in
the attack have been Sau (1,777 minutes), Ibarbo (1,664) and Pinilla
(1,406).
Sau and Pinilla, in fact, along with Nenê (two goals in his last two
games), represent the team’s main source of goals, with 5 each. This
also shows that they have no player in double-digits scoring figures
yet, whereas last year Sau had already notched 11 by Week 31.
In their last game, which they lost 2-1 to Torino, Cagliari lined up in
a 4-3-1-2 formation: Avramov between the posts; Pisano, Rossettini,
Astori and Avelar in defense; Eriksson, Cabrera and Conti in midfield;
Ekdal supporting the striking pair of Ibraimi and Nenê. –

AS Roma will keep the 2nd position this week despite the result win, draw, or lose. The Roman gladiators have a tough game traveling to the Sant’Elia stadium to play against Caglairi. Juventus, technically, with better chances to win the home game against Livorno on Monday. Livorno are struggling to survive and pressure to remain in Serie A next season is the added motivation to cause an upset at the Juventus stadium.
The challenge is for AC Milan to continue the winning road and still dream with a spot in Europa League next season. Milan with 42 points are 5 points below the European Zone seeing Parma in the 6th position with 47 points.
We expect a fierce battle in the Europa League zone. Inter with the pressure to win to keep the 5th position. Last week, Inter could not defeat Livorno at the Armando Picchi Stadium after being 2-0, but ended with a 2-2 draw. Inter are playing this week at the Meazza against Bologna. Parma also playing a home game at the Ennio Tardini Stadium against Napoli. If Inter lose or draw with Bologna might go down to the 6th position. Parma will look to defeat Napoli and hope for Inter to lose to take over the 5th position. A victory for Inter might take them back to the 4th position in case of Fiorentina losing the home game against Udinese.
Battle also for survival. Chievo Verona with 27 points and Bologna with 26 points might go down to relegation if they lose their respective games and Livorno with 25 points defeat Juventus…. which is almost unthinkable.
