Commisso dedicates Bologna win to the fans

Rocco Commisso shares his thoughts after Fiorentina’s 4-0 victory over Bologna:

“It was a brilliant win and well deserved. Seeing the guys continuing to give their all until the end of what’s been a never-ending season bears witness to their professionalism and self-confidence.

“We were superb defensively and it was great to see Milenkovic among the goals again. I’m really happy that Brancolini and Terzic got to make their Serie A debuts too. The coach and his backroom team have been able to bring the best out of these players. Of course I’m delighted for Federico Chiesa and his hat-trick – he’s a player of indisputable ability.

“Now we can finally celebrate a big win at the Franchi and this one is dedicated to our fans. Hopefully, they’ll be able to support us from up close again soon.”

Iachini: "We need to be at our best against well-drilled Bologna"

Beppe Iachini has called for Fiorentina to maintain their focus as they prepare to welcome Bologna to the Stadio Artemio Franchi in the penultimate game of the 2019/20 Serie A season.
“Bologna are a very dangerous side with lots of quality,” said Iachini, speaking on Tuesday. “They’re well-organised and have been working under the same coach, Sinisa [Mihajlovic], for two years. They’re well-prepared and know each other really well. We’ll certainly need to produce a high-level performance across the board. It’s important that we recover our energy and focus because it’ll be a demanding game so we need to perform well.”
Iachini acknowledged that he will need to assess the fitness of his squad before making any decisions on the starting eleven to face Bologna on Wednesday.
“We’ll see in the sessions today and tomorrow morning,” he said. “Obviously recovery is key to the eleven we can put out. We’ll take everything into account and then I’ll make the decision on who can start. That said, as we’ve seen in recent weeks, starting from the bench doesn’t make you less important. There are games within games so we need the whole group to deliver a top performance and do their bit in the run-in.”
Iachini hinted there might be an opportunity for some of the players that have played less this season to get some game time in the final two games – but stressed that the priority is finishing strongly.
“We want to finish well and continue to perform well,” said the boss. “There are players that have been working with us so I’ll consider that, but the main thing is the desire to finish strongly. We’ve worked well together and could have had some more points, based on how we’ve performed on the pitch, in terms of the chances we’ve created and our stats – we’re still the best defence in the league [since the resumption].”

Last but not least, Iachini had warm words for the man who will be in the opposite dug-out on Wednesday evening, Sinisa Mihajlovic.
“I’m pleased that he is doing better after everything he’s gone through,” said Iachini. “I hope that it’s behind him and that he has better times to look forward to in terms of his health, which is the most important thing. I have a great relationship with him and I wish him all the best personally and professionally.”

Five things you need to know about Fiorentina v Bologna

Fiorentina take on Bologna at the Franchi in their penultimate Serie A match of the 2019/20 season on Wednesday night – and we’ve put together this rundown of five key facts and stats on the game to tide you over until kick-off.

1.    Fiorentina and Bologna have faced off in Florence on 73 occasions. Sixty-seven of those game have been in Serie, with Fiorentina winning 37, drawing 17 and losing 13. There was one meeting in the Divisione Nazionale (a 3-2 win for Bologna back on 25 November 1928), in addition to four Coppa Italia clashes (one win and three draws for the Viola) and one match-up in the Anglo-Italian Cup (a 1-1 draw on 17 May 1973). Overall, Fiorentina’s home record against Bologna reads 38 wins, 21 draws and 14 defeats, with 101 goals scored versus 65.

2.    Matches between Fiorentina and Bologna have always been known as the “Apennines Derby” on account of the proximity of the provinces of Florence and Bologna, which are only about 100 kilometres away from each other. The two cities are separated by the Northern Apennines.
3.    The first Fiorentina v Bologna match in Serie A took place on 11 October 1931 and ended with a 3-1 win for the visitors. Giuseppe Galluzzi got the goal for Fiorentina, while Gastone Baldi, Carlo Reguzzoni and Francisco Fedullo scored for Bologna, who would finish second in the league at the end of the season. Fiorentina – coached by the Austrian Hermann Felsner – finished fourth, spurred on by Serie A top scorer Pedro Petrone, who netted 25 times (the same number as Bologna’s Angelo Schiavio).
4.    There was another 3-1 home defeat for Fiorentina on 27 October 1968, in Week 5 of the 1968/69 Serie A season. It turned out to be the only defeat suffered by Bruno Pesaola’s side as they roared to their second league title. Lucio Mujesan, Giuseppe Savoldi and Faustino Turra scored for Bologna, with Mario Maraschi netting for Fiorentina. The Viola’s next league defeat only arrived in Week 5 of the 1969/70 season (a 1-0 home loss to Cagliari).
5.    The Fiorentina v Bologna match played on 14 April 2019, part of Week 32 of the 2019/20 season, was the first game of Vincenzo Montella’s second spell as Fiorentina coach (it finished 0-0. Montella had replaced Stefano Pioli, who had resigned after the 1-0 home defeat by Frosinone. Meanwhile, the Bologna v Fiorentina game on 5 January 2020 (1-1, goals from Marco Benassi and Riccardo Orsolini) saw Beppe Iachini take charge of the side for the first time following the firing of Vincenzo Montella after the 4-1 home defeat by Roma.

Juventus claimed their 9th consecutive Scudetto last week after defeating Sampdoria.   However, the party was crashed at the Sardegna Arena because Cagliari defeated Juventus with a 2-0.   Cagliari fought until the end and did not fear the Champions and claimed the home game.   Juventus remaining with 83 points.  Cagliari with the victory jumped from the 14th to the 13th position reaching 45 points.

Inter defeated Napoli at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium with a 2-0.  The victory secured Inter to keep the 2nd position reaching 79 points.   Atalanta is following closely in the 3rd position with 78 points.  Atalanta defeated Parma at the Ennio Tardini Stadium with a 1-2.    Inter having only +1 point ahead Atalanta.   The situation might change next week in the last game of the season.

Lazio  defeating Brescia, who are already relegated to the Serie B, with a 2-0.  Lazio reaching 78 points and are in the 4th position despite sharing the same points with Atalanta.  Based  on the head to head stats, Atalanta claim the 3rd position.   Lazio forwad Ciro Immobile scoring one goal remaining the top scorer of the Serie A with 35 goals.
