NAPOLI-MILAN: MATCH-PREVIEW, Serie A Week 26, Monday 22 February 2016

Everything you need to know for the team’s next Serie A match.

MILAN – Up next for Milan in Serie A is a trip to the San Paolo to take on Napoli. Ahead of the big game, we take a look back at previous meetings between the two teams in Naples in the second half of the season, former players from the past and the present, a memorable moment and the form of the two sides going into the Serie A clash.

PAST FIVE MEETINGS IN THE SECOND-HALF OF THE SEASON:

Season 2014/15: Napoli-Milan 3-0. Round 34.
Season 2013/14: Napoli-Milan 3-1. Round 23.
Season 2008/09: Napoli-Milan 0-0. Round 29.
Season 2007/08: Napoli-Milan 3-1. Round 37.
Season 2000/01: Napoli-Milan 0-0. Round 25.

FORMER PLAYERS:

NAPOLI: Gabriel (at Milan from 2012 to 2014, currently on loan at Napoli).

MILAN: Ignazio Abate (at Napoli in 2004-05).

The following are a selection of players to have spent time at both clubs:
José Altafini (at Milan from 1958-59 to 1964-65, at Napoli from 1965-66 to 1971-72), Giovanni Galli (at Milan from 1986-87 to 1989-90, at Napoli from 1990-91 to 1992-93), Paolo Di Canio (at Napoli in 1993-94, at Milan from 1994-95 to 1995-96), Marek Jankulovski (at Napoli from 2000-01 to 2001-02, at Milan from 2005-06 to 2010-11).

MEMORABLE MOMENT. Napoli-Milan 2-3. Round 28. Season 1987/1988.
Arrigo Sacchi’s Milan gave a sumptuous display and took a big step towards conquering Scudetto number 11 and the first of the Berlusconi era. Virdis broke the deadlock with a nice left foot strike only for Maradona to equalise on the stroke of half-time. The scores stayed tied until the 68th minute when Virdis headed home a Gullit cross to restore the Rossoneri’s lead. Gullit was then involved again providing another assist, this time for Marco Van Basten who made no mistakes to extend Milan’s lead. Careca cut the gap, but it counted for nothing as Milan leapfrogged Napoli in the table and went closer to winning the title.

AC MILAN HOLDS A SPECIAL PLACE IN MY HEART, SAYS PRESIDENT

MILAN – Here is the President’s interview to the Milan Channel on the day that he celebrates 30 years as Milan owner:

“Taking ownership of the club was a big responsibility towards my father and the club’s history. Coming here today to Milanello reminded me of my first visit here. I wanted to make plans so I could leave my mark over the years. After the first season with a coach that I did not choose, I found Arrigo Sacchi and we took the decision to appoint him as our coach. We had to win Serie A, the year after the European Cup and the Intercontinental Cup the year after that. We then became the most decorated club in the world. 5 victories from 8 European Cup finals. I have tried to be the most successful President. My life has been one of an entrepreneur and a politician, but Milan has a special place in my heart.
I have spoken to the coach and the players. The situation is complicated. Napoli have lost two away matches, one of which was undeserved at Juventus. They need to get back on track. If they win, they go back to the top of the table. They will be looking to get their fans back on side, who are charged up and extraordinary. Milan have been unlucky. We need to play with a lot of motivation. I have tried to spur them on by talking to them and now it is down to the coach to have his say.
Milan has a duty, an obligation to be one of the leading teams in world football. To manage that, we have to compete with clubs that are owned by people with infinite financial resources, almost all of it from oil. For this reason, Milan feels the need to find partnerships. We have been talking for a while with Mr. Bee who has the idea of commercialising the Milan brand in China where we have many fans. It’s important for us to have this increase in capital so we can have the chance to invest in the type of stars needed to be competitive.
Milan have to be competitive on the world stage. We want to start a new winning cycle with a team of young players, who will be the core of the team for many years such as Donnarumma, De Sciglio, Locatelli. Up front we have a top-class Italian player called Bonaventura who is a predestined no. 10. We have to buy two forwards, one could be Balotelli, if he were to wise-up. The other is still to be found.
I would like to say to all Milan fans that all of us, as my father used to say, have Milan in our hearts. Football is a metaphor for life, Milan are the example of these lads that take to the pitch and have to dominate opponents and the game, win and convince others, with passion, entertaining football and fairness. I believe Milan can be an important school and it has to be an important source from which all of us can learn from and with which we can be happy and peaceful.”

AC MILAN 30-YEAR ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

Milanello hosted the President’s big-day.

(IN THE PHOTO: the President cuts the cake at Milanello) MILANELLO – The President Silvio Berlusconi arrived at Milanello by helicopter at around 12.50 local time on Saturday and was welcomed by the club’s CEOs Barbara Berlusconi and Adriano Galliani.

Together, they made their way to the Club House where the President and his daughter followed Adriano Galliani in wishing Sinisa Mihajlovic a happy birthday.

The President also took the chance to thank Francesco Manico, the man behind the celebratory cake for the President’s 30 year anniversary in charge, before having a photo with the cake-designer and two CEOs.

After lunch, the President gathered the players, coach and managers together for the cutting of the cake.

The President then gave a toast in which he thanked Adriano Galliani in particular and spoke of his wish to see Milan back at the highest levels once again.

To the players meanwhile, he had the following message: “I hope you achieve all of the future goals you have in your hearts and minds.”

It was then Barbara Berlusconi’s turn and she took the opportunity to thank all of the kitchen and waiting staff for the quality of the service on the 30 year anniversary of her father’s presidency.

During the event, the President spoke to journalists at the press-room at Milanello. These were his comments: “We still harbour the dream of an all-Italian Milan. We have many young Italians in defence and we’re just missing a few in attack. Even if for the moment we have Bacca who is a clinical finisher. There have been many reforms that I have put forward in the past 30 years that have been successful such as the Champions League formula. We’re still missing something like a time-out as they have in basketball or even a European Championship that involves clubs with a great European tradition. There were three final deadlines with Mr. Bee which we weren’t able to respect because of the collapse of the Asian stock-market. But we like him a lot and we like his plan to commercialise the Milan brand in China. We ignored other offers because they were only seeking popularity.”
