Pirlo saying, “We can win the World Cup. I always play to win, and going beyond the group stage won’t be enough for me. Italy have all they need to go all the way:” This is what Andrea Pirlo had to say during today’s press conference. Pirlo seems to have no doubts about their first opponents though: “We have always delivered well against England. We have started studying them: they are a younger team now, very dynamic.”

Will Pirlo and Verratti play together during Italy’s World Cup opening match? “No problem. If two players are good enough to play at this level, they can always play together. We tested a solution with men in front of the defence and two play makers – we liked it and I am sure we can deliver. We work so that we can improve every day. My role has changed a bit compared to what it was, but we have different options, the main thing is to play at our best.”

What about the opponents? “Brazil and Spain are favourites. A World Cup can always throw up surprises, but Spain have all they need to defend their title: They are a massive team with some terrific match winners within their side.” Juventus officially extended Pirlo’s contract until 2016 today: “I decided to continue with Juventus because I feel well and we have been winning titles. We have done well in the league, but we have other goals too.”

It’s just sad that AC Milan midfielder Riccardo Montolivo is not participating in the 2014 World Cup due to an injury sustained during the friendly game Italy vs. Ireland, a friendly played at Craven Cottage on 31 May 2014.  Montolivo was wearing the captain’s armband on that day, but can now only watch his teammates on TV and cheer for Italy.

In an interview given to La Gazzetta dello Sport to Fabiana Della Valle, Montolivo saying,: “I felt angered and disappointed. I immediately understood that my injury was serious. I went out, I tried to come back onto the pitch and heard a ‘crack’. In that very second I knew my World Cup dream was over.” The most difficult moment was still to come: “At the hotel, after the match, all my teammates and members of the staff came to see me. I really appreciated it. Chiellini came the following morning too, he now writes to me every day from Brazil. Many of my colleagues do so too.”

And now? “I will follow the World Cup as a fan, like in 1998, 2002 and 2006. Back in those days, I used to watch the games with friends, eating pizza and drinking beer.” Which teams can win the World Cup? “Brazil, Spain and Germany are the favourites, we are at the on a par with Argentina and Holland.”

Here are the declarations of former Italy captain Dino Zoff, who won the 1982 FIFA World Cup,  on Italy’s Group D:

“It’s one of the most complicated groups, especially because all our opponents are teams full of character. Italy have always had some problems during the group stages, but delivered better at the later stages of the tournament. I think Italy will progress beyond the group stage: If they do, they will reach the semi-finals too.”

Who are the favourites? Who will be the shining star of the tournament? Dino Zoff has no doubts. “Brazil are the favourites for sure, although playing at home will put them under a lot of pressure. I also like Argentina and Uruguay, followed by Germany, Spain and Italy. The star? Messi.” The former Italy goalkeeper expects it to be an entertaining tournament: “Strikers will be crucial in this World Cup; there will be lots to see.”
