It’s just sad that AC Milan midfielder Riccardo Montolivo is not participating in the 2014 World Cup due to an injury sustained during the friendly game Italy vs. Ireland, a friendly played at Craven Cottage on 31 May 2014. Montolivo was wearing the captain’s armband on that day, but can now only watch his teammates on TV and cheer for Italy.
In an interview given to La Gazzetta dello Sport to Fabiana Della Valle, Montolivo saying,: “I felt angered and disappointed. I immediately understood that my injury was serious. I went out, I tried to come back onto the pitch and heard a ‘crack’. In that very second I knew my World Cup dream was over.” The most difficult moment was still to come: “At the hotel, after the match, all my teammates and members of the staff came to see me. I really appreciated it. Chiellini came the following morning too, he now writes to me every day from Brazil. Many of my colleagues do so too.”
And now? “I will follow the World Cup as a fan, like in 1998, 2002 and 2006. Back in those days, I used to watch the games with friends, eating pizza and drinking beer.” Which teams can win the World Cup? “Brazil, Spain and Germany are the favourites, we are at the on a par with Argentina and Holland.”
