Atalanta battling and grabbing a draw in the Champions League Group Stage Group F Matchday 1 game against Villarreal on Tuesday 14 September 2021 at the Estadio de la Cerámica in Villarreal, Spain.  Atalanta saving a point in a rollercoaster after leading the game then losing it, until the end managed to equalize in the 83rd minute to draw for the 2-2.   • Stats before the game.  This will be the first ever European match between Villarreal and Atalanta, while the Spanish team have lost three of their four Champions League matches against Italian opponents (1W), losing once to Inter in 2006 and two to Napoli in phase a 2011/12 groups.  For the third consecutive season of the Champions League, Atalanta face a Spanish team, although the previous meetings have all taken place in the round of 16: two wins and an 8-4 aggregate over Valencia in 2019/20, two defeats and a 1 -4 overall against Real Madrid last season.  Atalanta are participating in their third edition of the Champions League and have passed their group in each of the previous two (2019/20 and 2020/21), finishing second on both occasions and, in 2019/20, becoming one of only two teams in the history of the Champions League to lose the first three games of the group and pass anyway, together with Newcastle in 2002/03 (second group stage).  Villarreal are looking for their first home win in the Champions League since October 2008, the year in which they won 6-3 against the Danes of Aalborg.

Atalanta reacting and equalized for the 2-2- in the 83rd minute. Robin Gosens adding light to the game scoring with a left footed shot to the bottom left corner. The assist is by Aleksey Miranchuk. Gosens has scored each of his three Champions League goals in away matches, in the second half.

Villarreal remaining with 10 players in the 84th minute. Francis Coquelin getting a second yellow card for the automatic 🟥 card.
