Q&A: Indonesian fans quiz Pjanic

Francesco Totti will forever be the king of Rome but judging by the amount of fans camped out in the team’s Indonesian hotel with ‘Pjanic 15’ on their backs, it’s clear that the Bosnian midfielder is fast emerging as one of Roma’s most popular stars.

The midfielder, who scored a wonder goal against Manchester City at the Melbourne Cricket Ground last week, has been a massive hit with fans since arriving in Indonesia on Friday night and today he sat down with asroma.it to answer questions posed by local fans on the club’s Facebook page. Here’s the Q&A in full…

What do you want to achieve at Roma?
“I would like to try and win a lot of titles – to bring the club as much success as possible every year. It’s not easy as there are a lot of good teams in Serie A. It is most important every year to play in the Champions League. The priority is to win titles and to bring trophies to this club.”

Do you hope to wear the number 10 shirt one day when Totti is finished playing?
“No, I think it’s Francesco who has to decide who will take his number 10. I think that this number is very important for the fans and for the club and everyone here in Rome. I think the best thing to do is that Francesco decides what is done with this number, who takes it, because Francesco has done a lot for this club and a lot for Rome. It’s not easy to take this number. There are a lot of responsibilities. The supporters will be happier if Francesco decides who will take this number. It’s an important number.”

What has been your favorite moment at Roma so far?
“I don’t know, maybe our last game against Lazio. It was an incredible feeling to see how the fans very happy. It was an important game for both team but the better team won. The better team finished the season higher in the championship. We had a good season so that game was an incredible feeling.”

Who was your favorite footballer growing up?
“Zidane. It was incredible to see what he could do with the ball and how he was playing for the other players. He did a lot of simple things but sometimes the simplest things are the most difficult. It was beautiful to see him on the field and watch every game of his. For me, in my time watching football, he’s one of the very best I saw.”

What’s your favorite thing about Rome, the city?
“The city is incredible. Every day I learn something new from this city because the city is so beautiful. I think one of the most beautiful things in the world is the coliseum. We have fantastic weather during the year and we eat very well here. I am very happy to be here. Every day I can see something new that I have never seen before.”

What is the secret of your free-kicks?
“There’s no special secret but I work a lot on the free-kicks. I know that in some games it can be very important for our team. We saw that in the game against Lazio. The second goal we scored came after a free-kick when Mapou scored with his head. It all comes down to a lot of work. every player has his special technique to show and I have mine.  I work a lot every day to be better.”

Who has been the biggest influence on your career?
“I think the most important person in my career from the start has been my father because he has followed my whole career. He knows me better than anyone else. He knows what I have to do and what I have to do better. He tells me after every game what I can do better and what I did well.”

What is your favorite position?
“Central midfield as I like to have a lot of contact with the ball. I am a player who likes to have the ball in his possession. I think that the philosophy of our coaches is very good for me because I am a player who likes to play for others and likes to play with others. Our coach, he’s asking that of me as a central midfielder.

What is your main target for next season?
“To try and win something. Last season was very difficult as Juventus played very well all season and won the championship. They also played in the final of the Champions League. Every year we will try and get closer to Juve. It’s important to play every year in the Champions League and to try and win some trophies.”

Will you still work in football when you retire?
“I don’t know as I am still young. I hope to play a long time in football because I love it. We will see but I probably will. Why not?”

Is there a reason you have the number 15 shirt?
“It’s the first number I had in my career at FC Metz so I like it a lot. I also like the number 8 but when I arrived another player had it.”

Who do you think was AS Roma’s best player last season?
“I think a lot of players had a good season. I think that Radja played a nice season, Florenzi and Manolas also had a nice season. However, I don’t like to single out players because football is a team game. If anyone plays well, it’s because of their team-mates helping them play well. If I had to pick one of those three though it would be Radja.”

Finally, what was your favourite goal of last season?
“Mapou’s goal against Lazio. No question.”
