Even before his breakout season with Genoa this year, Iago Falque already had some experience of Italian football. He joined Juventus in 2008, playing for the Primavera side alongside the likes of Lorenzo Ariaudo, Luca Marrone and Ciro Immobile.
The following season, Falque moved on loan to Bari, again plying his trade with the youth side. Yet the Spaniard’s true breakthrough would come some time later, under the guidance of Gian Piero Gasperini in the Ligurian city of Genoa. The Rossoblu coach reserved him a spot in his side’s attacking trio, resulting in the best goal-scoring form of Falque’s career – his 13-goal haul in the 2014-15 Serie A season was equal to Paulo Dybala, Miroslav Klose and Fabio Quagliarella.
The 25-year-old winger was born in Vigo to a politically active family (his mother is a member of parliament in Spain) and served his footballing apprenticeship in the Barcelona youth system. Falque moved nomadically between Italy, Spain and England during the early part of his career, playing for Villarreal, Tottenham Hotspur, Southampton, Almeria and Rayo Vallecano before settling at Genoa.
Blessed with a low center of gravity and quality to burn, Falque is a left-footed winger with prodigious dribbling ability and a great shot. Indeed, in order to take full advantage of his explosive shooting ability, Gasperini often played him out on the right flank last season to enable him to cut in on his left and look for goal. After Joquim Peiro, Luis Del Sol, Cesar Gomez, Ivan Helguera, Pep Guardiola, Jose Angel and Bojan Krkic, Iago Falque becomes the eighth Spaniard to join Roma since the club’s foundation in 1927.
