Fiorentina take on rivals Juventus at Allianz Stadium in the lunchtime kick-off on Sunday – and we’ve prepared ten key stats and facts on the match to pass the time until the referee’s whistle.

2.    The first-ever top-flight Juventus v Fiorentina clash took place on 12 June 1932, the last day of the 1931/32 season, and ended in a 2-2 draw. Fiorentina’s Pedro Petrone scored the Viola’s first goal away from home against Juventus – and it was thanks to that strike that Petrone pulled level with Bologna’s Angelo Schiavio on 25 goals for the season to win a share of the league’s top-scorer gong. The Uruguay would score again a few months later as Fiorentina beat Juventus for the first time, in Florence on 8 January 1933.

3.    Fiorentina have won at Juventus in the league on six occasions: in 1940/41 (Romeo Menti scored the winner in a 3-2 win), in 1955/56 (a 4-0 win on the way to Fiorentina’s first league title), in 1968/69 (a 2-0 win that secured the Viola a second Scudetto crown), in 1984/85 (a 2-1 victory courtesy of goals from Luca Cecchoni and Daniel Passarella), in 1987/88 (another 2-1 win, this time featuring goals from a young Roberto Baggio and Alberto Di Chiara) and most recently in 2007/08 (remembered for a stunning Pablo Daniel Osvaldo goal deep into stoppage time).

4.    The Viola have beaten Juventus away from home twice in the Coppa Italia too. The first win came back on 24 May 1936, a 3-1 victory at the quarter-final stage, while the other was much more recent, with Mohamed Salah striking twice to hand Fiorentina a 2-1 win in the semi-final first leg on 5 March 2015.

5.    Juventus and Fiorentina have faced off in two finals over the year, one domestic and one European. On 18 September 1960, Juventus beat Fiorentina 3-2 in the Coppa Italia final in Rome, while on 2 May 1990, the two sides met again in the first leg of the 1989/90 Coppa Italia final in Turin. Juventus secured a 3-1 win, with Renato Buso scoring for the Viola. The second leg was played on 16 May 1990 in Avellino (Fiorentina were barred from playing at the Franchi) and finished in a 0-0 draw, meaning the Bianconeri won the cup. It proved to be Roberto Baggio’s last appearance for Fiorentina – he was sold to Juventus the very next day.

6.    It’s worth looking a little more closely at those two Fiorentina wins at Juventus that coincided with title-winning campaigns for the Viola. On 2 October 1955, in Week 3 of Serie A, Fiorentina ran out 4-0 winners courtesy of goals from Miguel Montuori, Ardico Magnini and a brace from Giuseppe Virgili. The thumping win was a statement of intent from Fulvio Bernardini’s Fiorentina, who finished the season on 53 points – 12 clear of AC Milan in second. By contrast, Fiorentina’s 2-0 win at Juventus on 11 May 1969 came in Week 29 of the 1968/69 season – the penultimate round. Goals from Luciano Chiarugi and Mario Maraschi were enough for Bruno Pesaola’s Viola side to clinch their second Scudetto title. They finished on 45 points, four clear of Cagliari and AC Milan.

7.    The 2-0 win on 11 May 1969 is memorable for another reason too. Giuliano Sarti was the substitute goalkeeper for Juventus that day – and he just happened to have been the keeper for Fiorentina when they won their first Scudetto title. When Maraschi scored Fiorentina’s second, Sarti is said to have celebrated on the bench, provoking the anger of his team-mates. In response, Sarti said: “Sorry, but if we can’t win the league, it’s better that they win it, right?” Sure enough, Juventus limped to a fifth-place finish, ten short of champions Fiorentina.

8.    There have been some spectacular draws at Juventus over the years. Take the 3-3 draw on 6 January 2001, for example, which saw goals from Nuno Gomes and Enrico Chiesa (2). Juventus were looking to keep pace with Roma – who would go on to win the league – but Fiorentina were in the midst of a seven-match unbeaten run which featured home wins over Inter and AC Milan. The point at Juventus saw Fiorentina draw level with Lazio in fourth spot.

9.    Something unique happened on 29 April 2015: Fiorentina were awarded two penalties away from home at Juventus. The first was converted on 33 minutes, while the second – which would have drawn the Viola level at 2-2 – was fired wide on 67 minutes. The match ended in a 3-2 win for Juventus (Josip Ilicic scored the other Fiorentina goal), as the Viola were left ruing the missed opportunity.

10.    The most recent Juventus v Fiorentina match-up took place on 20 April 2019, with the Bianconeri getting a 2-1 win. Nikola Milenkovic handed the Viola a 1-0 lead on six minutes, but Alex Sandro hauled Juventus level just after the half-hour mark before a German Pezzella own goal shortly after the restart condemned Fiorentina to defeat.
