Pulgar: "Looking forward to a great season. We must aim high"

Erick Pulgar believes great things lie ahead for Fiorentina as the club rebuilds under new ownership.

Speaking at his press unveiling on Friday after completing his move from Bologna, the midfielder said he was convinced by the club’s plans for the future and insisted that he and the club must think big.

The Chile international also confirmed that he will wear the No.7 shirt previously worn by his fellow countryman David Pizarro.

Sporting director Daniele Prade introduced the Viola’s latest signing, who follows the recent additions of Kevin-Prince Boateng, Pol Lirola and Milan Badelj.

“It took a long time to complete negotiations for Pulgar and there were lots of clubs interested in him,” Prade explained.

“We’ve signed Erick because we want great footballers. He can play as part of a double pivot, or with one player sitting deeper and another up in the hole.

“In his four years at Bologna he has developed into an international-level player. He’s improved massively and is real leader on the pitch.

“He also comes highly recommended by Pizarro – he’s told me about this lad so many times that in the end I signed him!”

Pulgar then took questions from the gathered media.

Have you spoken to Pizarro at all?

“No, I haven’t but I’m thrilled to be here. I can’t wait to meet my new team-mates and start training with them. I’m looking forward to having a great season.”

Where do you fit in this Fiorentina side? Can you play alongside Badelj?

“I think we are quite similar players but I’ll get to know him and the others better on the training ground. I think I can learn from him but I’ll also bring my own contribution to the team.”

Has the last year been important for your development?

“Yes, I think I’ve improved a lot, both at Bologna and with Chile, playing alongside the likes of [Arturo] Vidal and [Charles] Aranguiz.”

You scored against Fiorentina from a corner two seasons ago. Will you take set-pieces here?

“I don’t know. I have to speak to the coach about that. It’s up to him.”

Why did you decide to join Fiorentina?

“Because of the big plans the club have. There are lots of great players here.”

What’s your greatest strength and which area of your game would you like to improve?

“I think I provide balance to the team. I want to improve in lots of areas at Fiorentina by working on little things every day.”

What dreams do you have at Fiorentina?

“I want us to go as far as we possibly can. My goal is to win every match. We must aim high.”
