Primavera: Fiorentina sink Cagliari to end winless run

Fiorentina Primavera produced an impressive performance to beat high-flying Cagliari 2-0 on Saturday and pick up their first league win in nine games.

Christian Koffi gave Emiliano Bigica’s side the lead in the first half, latching onto a long ball forward to lob the Cagliari goalkeeper for 1-0, while Toni Fruk’s second-half tap-in wrapped up the scoring and secured all three points for the Viola.

“The players’ attitude has been right in every game this season,” said Bigica after the game. “They’ve tried to play at a high intensity and to press the opposition with everything they have. They knew that 100% wasn’t going to be enough and that they would need to find an extra gear, and today we’ve produced one of our best performances of the year to finally get the win.”
Bigica insisted that his team will learn from their long period without a win.
“We’ve always tried to maintain a very relaxed approach during this period,” he said. “We’ve always tried to make a clear distinction between the performance and the result, because the performances were there even if the results weren’t. The players will definitely go through spells like this again in the future. This league prepares them for that.”
Centre-forward Samuele Spallutto also talked up the importance of the result for the team.
“We needed a win because although we’ve been playing well for a while, we haven’t been able to get the results,” he said. “We’ve finally got the win and we deserve that as a group.”
