It’s a sad day for Italian football.  On behalf of Italian Soccer Serie A blog hosted by Anna Italia we are sending our deepest condolences to Cesare Maldini family and fans for the death of Cesare dying at age 84 on Sunday 3 April 2016 in Milan, Italy.   In his honor, there was a minute of silence held before every Serie A game in Italy and AC Milan players wearing black armbands in their game against Atalanta at the Atleti Azzurri D’Italia Stadium.

Cesare Maldini, an icon of AC Milan, born in Trieste 5 February 1932 and dying in Milan on Sunday 3 April 2016.   Maldini played as a defender for AC Milan gaining also the admiration of other Clubs for his commanding elegance, leadership, and respectful person.  It was a joy for Cesare to see also his son Paulo Maldini becoming an AC Milan icon in the defense and serving as Captain too.   Now, Cesare Maldini will continue as his grandson Christian and Daniel (Paolo’s sons) is playing for AC Milan Youth program.

Cesare Maldini won with AC Milan:

  • 4 Serie A league titles “Scudetto”
  • 1 European Cup.  Precisely, nine years after joining AC Milan became the first Italian ever to hold  the famous European Cup trophy when he captained AC Milan to a 2-1 win over Benfica.
  • Cesare Maldini played for Triestina 1952-1954 making 32 appearances, 1954-1966 for AC Milan making 347 appearances and scoring 3 goals, and 1966-1967 for Torino making 33 appearances.

In the International level, Cesare Maldini played for the Italian National football team.

  • Maldini earning 14 caps and participating in the 1962 World Cup.
  • Maldini also served as coach of the Italian Under-21 side, winning the European Under-21 Championship with a record three consecutive times.
