AC Milan won the Europa League Playoff First Leg game against Stade Rennais on Thursday 15 February 2024 at the San Siro Stadium in Milan, Italy. Milan’s Europa League adventure begins after finishing third in Group F of the Champions League behind Borussia Dortmund and PSG.  It is an important victory and qualification to the Round of 16 is closer.  The second leg will be played on Thursday 22 February in France.  Stade Rennais finished second in Group F behind Villarreal but, like the Milanese, unbeaten in their championship since mid-December.

AC Milan opened the score in the 32nd minute. Ruben Loftus-Cheek defeated Rennes goalkeeper Steve Mandanda with a headed shot to the bottom left corner. The assist is by Alessandro Florenzi.

A perfect match for Ruben Loftus-Cheek scoring a brace in the 47th minute!

Stats before the game: Milan and Rennes will meet for the first time in official matches: Milan have overcome four of the last five knockout matches against French opponents in major European competitions, the last of which saw the Rossoneri eliminate Lyon in the quarter-finals of the Champions League 2005/06.  This will be Rennes’ fifth match against an Italian opponent in the Europa League, after the double group match with Udinese in 2011/12 (1N, 1L) and then with Lazio in the 2019/20 edition (1W, 1N ). In the most recent match against these opponents, the French club prevailed over the Biancocelesti 2-0. Milan, which emerged victorious from the last match played in the UEFA Champions League group stage against Newcastle, could find two consecutive successes in Europe a year after the last positive series (three consecutive successes in the streak ending on 14 February 2023, in the UCL round of 16 against Tottenham). After winning away against both Panathinaikos on matchday three and against Maccabi Haifa in the fifth round of the 2023/24 Europa League group stage, Rennes could for the first time achieve three consecutive away wins in a major competition European.
