Atalanta making history winning the UEFA Europa League Final game against Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday 22 May 2024 at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland. Coach Gian Piero Gasperini wins the Europa League, the historic first for Atalanta. After a one-sided first half with Atalanta unstoppable and with a superhero Lookman, in the second half Leverkusen’s timid initial reaction was not enough. The Orobic team waits, defends, gains ground and finally closes it out, in the 75th minute, with the undisputed MVP of the match: Ademola Lookman again.

Bayern Leverkusen have faced Atalanta on two occasions in European competitions, with the Italian team winning both legs of the 2021/22 Europa League round of 16. Only against Inter (three defeats in three matches) have Bayer played more matches among the teams against which they have always lost in major European competitions.

✅ Stats before the game: This will be the eighth final of a major European competition between a German and an Italian team and the first since the Champions League final in 2010, which Inter won 2-0 against Bayern Munich. In the UEFA Cup/Europa League, it is the first since 1997, when Schalke 04 beat Inter on penalties after a draw in the first and second legs. Bayer Leverkusen reached their third European final in UEFA competitions, after the double UEFA Cup final in 1988 against Espanyol (0-3 defeat in the first leg, 3-0 victory in the second leg, with the final success for the team German team reached the penalty shoot-out) and the 2002 UEFA Champions League final against Real Madrid (lost 2-1). This will be Atalanta’s first European competition final, becoming the 11th different Italian team to reach such a final and the first since Lazio in the 1998 UEFA Cup (lost 3-0 to Inter). On the day of the final, for the Dea it will be 60 years and 261 days since the first European match played in September 1963, the longest wait for a team to play its first European final, a record that will be surpassed the following week by Olympiakos in the Conference League final (64 years, 259 days – 1959-2024
