Belgium 0 – 1 Slovakia
🏆👉 Slovakia grabbed an important victory winning Group E Matchday 1 for the UEFA EURO 2024 against Belgium on Monday 17 June 2024 at the Frankfurt Arena in Frankfurt, Germany. The Belgian national team got off to a strong start, wasting the opportunity to take the lead through Romelu Lukaku in the 3rd minute, whose shot from two yards out was blocked by Dúbravka. Sadly, it was a bad day for Lukaku seeing two goals ruled out.
Four minutes later, Slovakia managed to take the lead through Ivan Schranz, who hit the back of the net after a shot by Kucka who had taken advantage of a mistake by the Belgian rearguard in the build-up. The first half ended with another chance for the Red Devils, with Lukaku dragging the ball to the back in an attempt to jump Dúbravka.Il second half restarted with Slovakia trying to legitimise the lead and Belgium struggling to make themselves dangerous.
Belgium come into this match after stringing together 15 consecutive useful results (W10 D5) in their last matches played between European Championship qualifiers, World Cups and friendly matches: the Red Devils’ last defeat dates back to 27 November 2022 (2-0 for Morocco at the World Cup in Qatar).

✅ Stats before the game: Belgium and Slovakia face each other for the first time in an official match. In the three previous meetings (friendly matches) there have been two draws (1-1 in 2002 and 2006) and a win for the Belgians in the most recent fixture, 2-1 in 2013. Since losing to West Germany in the final in 1980 (their best-ever finish in the tournament), Belgium have never managed to reach the semi-finals of the UEFA European Championship. The Belgians have been eliminated in the quarter-finals in each of the last two editions. None of Belgium’s last 17 UEFA European Championship matches have ended in a draw (W9 L8), a run that began in the 1980 final (1-2 against West Germany).
