In honor of the first-ever Day of Italian Sport in the World, initiated by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Italian Embassy in Lisbon teamed up with Sport Lisboa e Benfica to unveil an exhibition curated by Luis Lapão and Andrea Ragusa. This remarkable project, in collaboration with the Museum of the Grande Torino and the Granata Legend, showcases memorabilia from the Grande Torino. Having said that, this has never been revealed outside of Italy until now.
In conjunction with the Exhibition, we reflect on a sorrowful moment: “May 4, 1949, stands as a grim milestone in the annals of world football. After playing a match with Benfica in Lisbon, the plane transporting the Grande Torino back to Italy met with disaster in Superga, only a short distance from their arrival point. The crash resulted in the loss of 31 lives, including three journalists who were traveling with the players.”
The Granata Club’s visit was organized to pay tribute to Francisco Ferreira, the captain of both his team and the Portuguese national team, during a memorable match. This occasion was possible through the friendship shared by the legendary Torino captain Valentino Mazzola and the well-known “Chico” Ferreira. The tragedy left a significant mark on the sports community. This elevated the Grande Torino from a historical team to a legendary one. Ever since those memorable handshakes in 1949, the connection between the two clubs has stayed strong. In conclusion, this relationship encourages a collaborative spirit. It enables us to come together in celebrating and refreshing that treasured memory.
