Napoli won the Champions League Group Group Stage on Tuesday 24 October 2023 at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, Germany. Fundamental victory for Napoli in Berlin thanks to Giacomo Raspadori’s goal assisted by Kvaratskhelia. Union failed to react and instead suffers a ninth consecutive defeat which could cost coach Fischer his bench. Thanks to Real Madrid’s simultaneous victory over Braga, Napoli climbed to the second place in Group C with six points, three points behind Ancelotti’s men, who are first with full points. Union sadly remains at zero, qualification for the round of 16 now seems highly unlikely for the Germans.

Napoli are now awaiting the big championship match against Milan, then they will have Salernitana and on November 8th a good portion of the qualification in the return match against the Germans will be played at the Diego Armando Maradona. For Union, however, the next match is the championship match against Werder Bremen.

Napoli opened the score in the 65th minute. Giacomo Raspadori defeated Union Berlin goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow with a left-footed shot to the bottom left corner. The assist is by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

✅  Stats before the game: This is the first competitive match between Union Berlin and Napoli and Union’s first match against an Italian team. After suffering poor results in their first 10 away matches against German opposition (including East Germany) in all competitions (D5, L5), Napoli have won their last three, beating Wolfsburg 4-1 in the 2014/15 Europa League , Leipzig in the same competition in 2017/18 and Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 in last year’s Champions League. Union Berlin lost both matches in this Champions League (against Real Madrid and Sporting Braga). If they lose, they would be the second German team to lose their first three games in the competition, after FC Schalke 04 in 2001/02. Napoli lost 3-2 in their last Champions League match (against Real Madrid); they have not lost two consecutive matches in the competition since 2017/18, when both defeats came in back-to-back matches against Manchester City in the group stage. Union Berlin lost both matches in this Champions League due to winning goals scored in the 90th minute; the only team in the history of the competition to lose three matches in this way in a single season was Dynamo Kiev in 2003/04
