Napoli lost the Champions League Group Group Stage against Real Madrid on Tuesday 3 October 2023 at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in Naples, Italy. The fans, despite the defeat, ends with Maradona’s applause, as they emerge defeated but with their heads held high against Real Madrid. Napoli took the lead with Leo Østigård goal in the first half but were overtaken by Vinicius Júnior’ goal and Jude Bellingham’s magic. In the second half, Piotr Zielinski brings his team back to the 2-2 penalty awarded due to a touch from Nacho’s hand, but in the final comes Valverde’s shot which triggers Alex Meret’s unfortunate own goal.
A victory with a special flavor for Carlo Ancelotti, who returns to Naples after the not-so-happy experience in the shadow of Vesuvius. The Italian coach replaced Maurizio Sarri as manager of the Neapolitans in 2018 only to be sacked in December 2019.
Napoli opened the score in the 19th minute. Leo Østigård defeated Real Madrid goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from very close range with a headed shot following a corner conceded by Antonio Rüdiger.

✅ Stats before the game: Napoli have never beaten Real Madrid in four matches in all competitions (1N, 3L), played between the 1987/88 European Cup (first round) and the 2016/17 Champions League (round of 16). Real Madrid have won 14 of their last 15 Champions League matches against Italian teams, winning all seven away games in this run; the only exception in the series was the 3-1 home defeat against Juventus in April 2018, in a match which however did not lead to Los Blancos’ elimination from the competition. Real Madrid have won 28 of their 48 Champions League matches against Italian teams: no team has ever beaten teams from another particular nation more times in the history of the competition. Napoli have lost just two of their 21 home matches in the Champions League group stage (W15 D4), against Besiktas in October 2016 and Manchester City in November 2017; they have won each of the last four such matches, always scoring at least three goals per match. Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has lost just two of his 12 matches against Napoli in all competitions (9W, 1D); however, this will be his first match as coach against the Neapolitans since the 0-0 draw in Serie A in March 2009, in charge of Milan.
🏆👉 Lineup NAPOLI (4-3-3): Meret; Di Lorenzo, Ostigard, Natan, Olivera; Anguissa, Lobotka, Zielinski; Politano, Osimhen, Kvaratskhelia
🏆👉 Lineup REAL MADRID (4-3-1-2): Kepa; Carvajal, Rudiger, Nacho, Camavinga; Kroos, Tchouameni, Valverde; Bellingham; Rodrygo, Vinicius
