Serie A Standing BEFORE the game:
Cagliari, 15th position with 36 points and a negative goal difference of -25
Fiorentina, 8th position with 54 points and a positive goal difference of +13

Fiorentina won the Serie A Week 38 game defeating Cagliari on Thursday 23 May 2024 at the Unipol Stadium in Cagliari, Italy. Fiorentina mathematically conquered the eighth place which is worth qualification to the Conference League. Cagliari is mathematically safe, thanks to the victory at Sassuolo. For the Sardinians, fifteenth with 36 points, this is the last match with Coach Claudio Ranieri on the bench, who after yet another sporting miracle has decided to stop coaching club teams, leaving a window of opportunity for possible experiences as coach. For Fiorentina it is actually the penultimate matchday: the Viola still have to recover the match against Atalanta, scheduled for Sunday 2 June.

At the end of the match, a farewell to the Coach and the team.

Daring final at the Unipol Domus, with the home team managing to overturn the deficit they had developed in the first half, only to be recovered and overtaken in injury time by Fiorentina. A crackling second forty-five minutes: Cagliari starts again strongly and manages to equalize in the 64th minute with captain Deiola, who did well to get in on Prati’s cross and put past Terracciano. In the 85th minute, Cagliari also took the lead with 2003 Mutandwa, who, served by Nandez, took center stage and unleashed a powerful right-footed shot to the far post to score his first goal in Serie A. But Cagliari’s joy lasted only four minutes, as in the 89th minute Nico Gonzalez equalized with an assist from Biraghi. After ten minutes of injury time, the insult for Cagliari: Beltran anticipates Di Pardo and is brought down. After a check on the monitor Prontera concedes the penalty kick: Arthur makes no mistake and scores the goal to make it 2-3.

Stats before the game: Fiorentina have remained unbeaten in their last six matches against Cagliari in Serie A (3W, 3D), conceding just one goal in the period (João Pedro’s goal in the 1-1 draw on 23 January 2022) – the last time that Fiorentina Viola have recorded the most matches in a row without defeat against the Sardinians in the tournament dating back to the period April 2009-November 2012: eight (5W, 3N). After the success of the first leg (3-0 last October 2), Fiorentina could win both seasonal matches against Cagliari in Serie A for the first time since 2016/17 with Paulo Sousa on the bench (5-3 away and 1-0 at home in that case). Cagliari have drawn 17 of 41 home games against Fiorentina in Serie A (18W, 6L), including the two most recent ones. Only against Inter (18) has the rossoblù club had more home draws in the competition (17 also against Milan and Naples). This is the fourth time (out of four) that Cagliari has managed to save itself from being newly promoted to Serie A in the three points for a win era, after 1998/99, 2004/05, 2016/17. Furthermore, if they managed to get the three points against Fiorentina, Cagliari would close this Serie A championship with 39 points, at least two more than those achieved in the previous two seasons in the top flight (30 in 2021/22 and 37 in 2020/21).
