Monza caused an upset and win the Serie A Week 36 game against Sassuolo on Friday 19 May 2023 at the Mapei Stadium in Sassuolo, Italy. Monza’s comeback victory, after Domenico Berardi’s penalty lead, the guests find a draw with Ciurria and the winning goal with Pessina. Sassuolo remained with 10 players since the 68th minute after Ruan got a second yellow card for the automatic red card.

Sassuolo were unbeaten in the two previous matches between Serie A, Serie B and Coppa Italia against Monza: 3-1 victory on 15 August 2010 in the Coppa Italia and 1-1 draw in the first leg of this championship.

Referee Alberto Santoro gave a penalty to Sassuolo before ending the first half in the 45+5′ minute. It is forward Domenico Berardi to convert the penalty defeating Monza goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio with a left-footed shot to the bottom right corner. The penalty is conceded by Armando Izzo following a handball inside the penalty area.

Monza equalized in the 60th minute. Patrick Ciurria defeated Sassuolo goalkeeper Andrea Consigli with a right-footed shot to the high center.

Matteo Pessina scored the winner goal in the 92nd minute with a left-footed shot to the bottom right corner. The assist is by Samuele Vignato.

✅   Stats before the game: Sassuolo have remained unbeaten in their last eight matches against newly promoted teams in Serie A (W5, D3), winning both of the most recent ones (against Lecce and Cremonese).  In the second leg of this championship, Monza and Sassuolo have earned the same points (27 in 16 days), only Napoli (33), Juventus (31), Inter (29) and Lazio (28) have obtained more points in the same period in A league. Sassuolo have remained unbeaten in their last six home games in the league (W4, D2), the last time they recorded a longer streak without defeat at the MAPEI Stadium dates back to the period between February-May 2021 (seven). Monza have earned 49 points in this championship, in the last 70 years only two teams have obtained at least 50 points in their first ever season in Serie A (considering three points for a win since ever): Chievo in 2001/02 (54) and Parma in 1990/91 (51). Monza are unbeaten in seven league matches (W4, D3), only once in Serie A have they recorded eight matches in a row without defeat (between last November and February).
